Fire Fighter is responsible for rapid response to fires, accidents, and other emergencies to protect people, property, and the environment. Works with firefighting teams to control and extinguish fires and safely manage hazardous materials. Being a Fire Fighter performs search and rescue, responds to auto accidents, and provides emergency medical services. Uses and operates fire tools, equipment and apparatus as effectively and safely as possible. Additionally, Fire Fighter performs routine maintenance and inspection of firefighting equipment and gear to ensure proper condition and preparedness for emergencies. Prepares post-incident reports as required. May participate in fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. May require an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Fire Fighter works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
    1. Assumes responsibility for providing emergency medical care to victims of fires, automobile crashes, and other types of accidents.
    a. Assesses condition of victims and provides first aid treatment and basic life support as necessary.
    b. Assists paramedics in performing other emergency procedures as needed.
    c. Stabilizes and provides support to victims until transport to a medical facility. Acts with courtesy and sensitivity.
    d. Follows established policies, procedures, and safety measures when providing emergency services.
    2. Assumes responsibility for performing duties related to fire suppression and rescues.
    a. Responds promptly to fire and rescue calls including auto accidents, fires, collapsed buildings, and water rescues.
    b. Performs effective fire suppression and rescue activities as trained.
    c. Uses firefighting and rescue equipment properly. Performs required cleaning and maintenance on equipment and vehicles. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
    d. Follows procedures and safety measures as trained during firefighting and rescue incidents.
    e. Drives fire and rescue vehicles as assigned. Follows safe driving procedures.
    3. Assumes responsibility for maintaining and establishing good relations with the public and other public safety providers.
    a. Projects a professional image to the public.
    b. Works effectively with police, paramedics, and other personnel.
    c. Answers questions and resolves problems promptly.
    d. Provides fire prevention and safety education to schools and other groups as requested.
    e. Ensures appropriate levels of security and confidentiality are maintained.
    4. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with Agency personnel and management.
    a. Assists and supports related departments as required.
    b. Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant concerns.
    c. Attends and participates in meetings as required
    EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
    High school diploma or equivalent.
    Valid driver’s license. – Class B
    Emergency medical care and first aid certifications.
    Required fire training and certifications: Fire Fighter I, II; Driver/Operator, EMT.
    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
    Knowledge of operating life support, firefighting, and rescue equipment and vehicles.
    Thorough knowledge of fire suppression, rescue techniques, and emergency medical care.
    Knowledge of local geography.
    Knowledge of Agency policies and procedures.
    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
    1 Year firefighting experience.
    SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    Excellent verbal communication skills.
    Good interpersonal and public relations skills
    Ability to follow detailed, established procedures and instructions.
    Ability to recognize and resolve problems in rescue situations.
    Ability to exercise good judgment.
    Able to work well independently and as a team.
    Ability to remain calm and perform duties under extreme conditions
    Ability to operate related equipment.
    PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
    AVERAGE HEARING:
    Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
    AVERAGE VISUAL ABILITIES:
    Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents, products or operate machinery
    TALKING:
    Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly and quickly.
    REPETITIVE MOTIONS:
    Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
    Climbing: Including ladders, scaffolding, ramps, poles, etc.
    Balancing: May involve walking, standing, and/or crouching on narrow, slippery or moving surfaces.
    Stooping: Bending downward and forward at the waist. Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles
    KNEELING: Resting on knee or knees.
    CROUCHING: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.
    CRAWLING: Moving on hands and knees or hands and feet.
    REACHING: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
    STANDING: For extended time periods.
    WALKING: Especially for long distances.
    PUSHING: Using upper body to press against something with steady force.
    Pulling: Using upper body to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects.
    LIFTING: Use of upper body and back muscles to lift objects.
    Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.
    FEELING: Perceiving sensual characteristics of objects including size, shape, texture, temperature, ect through touch
    Physical Strength: Exerting more than 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or more than 50 lbs. frequently or more than 20 lbs. regularly
    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees).
    Work is performed both inside and outside. Subject to weather.
    Must work in a very noisy environment, which requires workers to shout to communicate.
    Must work under hazardous conditions including high places, chemical exposures, electrical current, moving machinery, exposure to blood, etc.
    The worker is subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system.
    Must work using a respirator.
    MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions.
