Fire Inspector jobs in Chicago, IL

Fire Inspector conducts inspections of new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with fire and safety codes. Prepares reports and issues violation documents. Being a Fire Inspector documents and defines actions needed to resolve non-compliance situations. Conducts fire investigations. Additionally, Fire Inspector has extensive knowledge of codes, ordinances, construction materials, and alarm systems. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science or equivalent. Has completed fire inspection training and may require the Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI) credential and applicable State License. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Fire Inspector is capable of working on complex problems and exceptions without direct supervision. Has a wide and comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of the job.     Pay Range – Depending On Qualifications:

    Ø Hourly rate - $25.00 to $26.25 – Entry Level

    Ø Hourly rate - $28.75 to $33.00 – NICET, NFPA or ICC Certifications required

    Responsibilities:

    Ø Witness testing and perform inspections for fire alarm, automatic fire sprinkler, and special fire protection systems.

    Ø Write clear and concise inspection reports and submit to the office in a timely manner.

    Ø Maintain professional, timely communication with clients and customers.

    Ø Ability to provide high level of customer service, manage multiple priorities, demonstrate attention to detail, and meet deadlines.

    Ø Attain various certifications and participate in continuing education.

    Education:

    Ø High school diploma or equivalent

    Ø Classes in fire technology or related degree program preferred

    Ø College degree preferred

    Experience Preferred:

    Ø The ideal candidates will have 2 or more years of experience performing fire protection inspections, installation or design of fire alarm, automatic fire sprinkler, or special fire protection systems.

    Ø NICET certification in fire protection (Automatic Sprinkler / Fire Alarm / Special Systems) preferred, other certifications will be considered.

    Ø ICC or NFPA Fire Inspector and/or Plans Examiner certification.

    Ø Knowledge of NFPA and ICC codes.

    Ø MS Office 2013 proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    Physical Ability:

    Ø Ability to climb ladders and be raised in lifts to inspect fire protection system equipment located near ceilings.

    Ø Ability to crawl on hands and knees to access low headroom spaces.

    Ø Ability to walk for long periods of time and to climb multiple flights of stairs.

    Job Type: Part-time

    Pay: $25.00 - $33.00 per hour

    Expected hours: No more than 30 per week
