Fire Inspector Supervisor oversees the inspection of fire-damaged dwellings to determine cause and prevention. Enforces a variety of fire laws, regulations, and policies. Being a Fire Inspector Supervisor requires a high school diploma or its equivalent with at least 4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Additionally, Fire Inspector Supervisor relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. May direct and lead the work of others. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.     Union: This position is included in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 2719 bargaining unit and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    • A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License at the time of filing application or prior to appointment, which must be maintained throughout employment.  Written requests for a special accommodation on the basis of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act will be considered by the Department of Human Resources and Civil Service on an individual basis.
    • Applicants must comply with the City of Pittsburgh's COVID 19 vaccination mandate.

    NOTE:  The Fire Inspector 1 Certification AND the National Fire Protection Agency 472 First Responder Certification must be acquired within six (6) months of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. 

     Qualifying Requirements:

    Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.  You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

    • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show two (2) years of full-time experience in the field of fire prevention enforcement.  (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
    • EDUCATION/TRAINING: None required for this position.
    • EQUIVALENCY:  Education/training may be substituted for work experience on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above).  The Total Qualifying Requirement is two (2) years.
    If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s).  You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position.  Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

    • Medical:  Required.
    • Inspects existing buildings within assigned area to determine that fire safety of building elements and life safety systems have been maintained in accordance with the International Fire Prevention Code and International Property Maintenance Code. 
    • Inspects existing buildings to assure that fire safety and life safety systems have been maintained in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
    • Reads and inspects from approved fire protection plans, specifications and reports.
    • Coordinates annual maintenance testing reports and fire protection acceptance testing reports for new installations with building managers and third party testing agencies.
    • Issues letters of violation and refers violations to Magistrate's Court.
    • Appears as a witness in Magistrate's Court and Court of Common Pleas.
    • Witnesses tests for fire protection systems, (i.e. fire alarm, sprinkler and standpipe systems).
    • Investigates complaints with regard to fire prevention codes and ordinances.
    • Inspects places of assembly (e.g. theaters, restaurants, etc.).
    • Canvasses assigned area and reports fire code and property maintenance code deficiencies and violations.
    • Reads construction plans, specifications and reports as approved by the department. 
    • May be required to be on 24 hour call.
    • Performs activities and functions of related personnel and other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
