Safe Site is currently hiring for the position of Damage Prevention Specialist (DPS) with entry level positions available. Safe Site utilizes innovative industry leading technologies to identify the presence of underground utilities. Individuals who typically flourish in the locate technician position are individuals that enjoy challenges and "solving puzzles" which translates to the satisfaction of finding all underground utilities on each site. DPS are self-starters and enjoy challenging themselves in an outdoor environment. Utility installation, landscaping, surveying, or lawn care experience helpful.

    Qualifications | Skills and Requirements

     Read and interpret utility maps / prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities.

     Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel, regarding underground facilities.

     Operate RD electronic detection equipment, to locate, mark and document under-ground utilities within prescribed accuracy limits.

     Provide accurate documentation with provided devices related to all locates completed.

     Use laptop computer, tablet, smartphone and/or other devices to receive, document and close out jobs.

     Operate company vehicles in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance.

     Be able to perform manhole entry using assigned equipment and safety devices.

     Perform work in all weather conditions safely, during normal and after hours if required.

     The employee shall always follow all safety rules.

     The employee shall not engage in unsafe acts.

     Weekend work, night work and/or overnight travel as needed.


    Key Safety Responsibilities and Critical Success Measures

    The Damage Prevention Tech’s purpose is to provide a safe, quality service in support of state and federal damage prevention programs, on behalf of our clients for the excavating community.

    Safe Work Habits

    • Follow all company, client, state, and federal damage prevention program guidelines.
    • Follow all company safety, quality, and operational policies and procedures.
    • Complete the company training and applicable operator qualification program requirements.
    • Represents the company in a professional manner.
    • Using locating equipment to determine location of utilities, mark area with paint and/or flags to prevent damage to utility infrastructure.
    • Fulfilling the entire scope of the locate requests (tickets) per damage prevention guidelines.
    • Adhere to the vehicle policy.
    • Reading utility prints and maps.
    • Communicating professionally when interacting with homeowners, contractors, and utility representatives.
    • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the underground facilities infrastructure.
    • Meet overtime and travel requirements.
    • Participation in rotational after hours on-call will be required.
    • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Team Leader.

    Competencies and Personal Attributes

     Able to learn and use a variety of computer programs.

     Must possess effective written and oral communication skills.

     Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

     Ability to work well with and take coaching and direction from others.

     Demonstrated ability to identify sources of measurement errors.

     Must be able and willing to travel and work in other cities, including both urban and remote areas.

     Attendance, punctuality, and reliability are essential requirements.

     Must be able to work/drive in inclement weather.

     Strong work ethic and team-player attitude along with be safety oriented.

     Ability to perform physical labor (i.e., strenuous walking, and lifting grates/manhole covers, hauling equipment) and physically maneuver around construction sites, including accessing excavations, trenches, structures, and other disturbed areas.

     Ability to travel (If the opportunity arises).

     Ability to carry and lift equipment as needed on project.

Fieldwork involves working outdoors in all types of weather, walking long distances, and standing for extended periods while measurements are taken. While performing these duties, an employee is frequently required to sit; talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
