JOB TITLE: Flight Controls System Engineer

PAY RANGE: $110-150k
SUMMARY:
This position will require analysis, optimization design, and develop flight or mission-critical onboard software for aircraft, helicopters, ground vehicles, vision systems, situational awareness and collision avoidance systems, see and avoid, redundancy management and UAV GNC and path planning systems. The Flight Controls System Engineer will participate hands-on in the full software life-cycle, from concept through implementation; integration to flight test.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Host design in Flight Lab or other physics-based tools of multiple VTOL designs, controllers, optimizer, and automation of aerospace functions
- Design research proposals that advance the SOA of PiAC IP and other designs
- Conduct gas turbine and duct inlet designs for minimal loss type airflow as well as minimize inlet pressure distortions
- Implement a dynamic model for the evaluation of torsional dynamics of a VTOL drive line stability, limit cycle, dynamic amplification factors and undamped mode encounters
- Develop, design, plan and generate proposals to our customers in accordance with PiAC WI/SOP and PiAC policy
- Conduct control system designs, mechanical and aero, for active PiAC programs
- Conduct OPV product development activities
- Design, refine, test and validate the FADEC and H2 fuel cell control laws, for the TAPU and reporting logic and interfaces status to aircrew
- Define, analyze and review software requirements and functional description, to customer needs and system quality and performance standards.
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines in planning, design and development of systems to ensure software and hardware performance and compatibility
- Design and develop of flight or mission-critical onboard software for manned systems
- Software verification and validation including writing Test Cases and Test Procedures.
- Develop, implement, and document data and software application test plans to validate that project deliverables meet quality standards
- Oversee and support processes and procedures for existing data and reporting activities to support internal and external customer deliverables. Examples of specific deliverables include but are not limited to: recurring reports and analyses; data validation and documentation
- Design, develop, code, test and debug control system software and interface with hardware design and development
- Support oversight of suppliers who develop a subset of the embedded software or verification test cases and procedures.
- Refine third party and open-source software for use in a airborne environment
- Typical software functionality for a manned aerospace includes guidance, navigation & control, mission sequencing, payload control, redundancy and contingency management, uplink and downlink packet encoding and decoding, converting between different serial protocols, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, ground based GUIs, and aircraft subsystem control (i.e., engine, electrical system, fuel system).
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Experience in developing physics based 6 DOF simulations, preference helicopters, fix wing, sensors, process flow (hydrogen gas path) and airships
- Drive usage of tools: Matlab/Simulink, C, C , Python for cost efficient development and execution of engineering tasks
- Ability to predict performance of helicopter VTOL and ship simulations
- Experience developing scripts to run batch processes
- Experience doing data post processing from simulation runs and raw flight test data
- Familiarity with autonomous guidance, navigation and control integration in a VTOL
- Experience developing control laws and algorithms in navigate in GPS denied environments
- Conduct project support using SOA rapid development and test solutions.
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS / CLEARANCES:
- BS & MS degree in engineering or applicable engineering or science field
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in a professional environment developing in MATLAB, Simulink control system development with auto code experience. Embedded code experience preferred.
