Flight Medic transports and transfers patients by aircraft and assesses the extent of an illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Provides advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Being a Flight Medic replenishes the aircraft with medical supplies after flights. Must be CPR certified. Additionally, Flight Medic requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to manager. Flight Medic's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.   • Dream Defenders is seeking a Medic to provide community-based crisis intervention services. These services are housed under the Healing and Justice Center. The Freedom House Mobile Crisis Unit (FH) exists to respond to mental health, substance abuse and homeless-related emergencies and dispatch a team of medics, crisis workers, and medical doctors in response to calls through our 1-866-SAFEMIA line.

    Freedom House provides a non-police mobile response to mental health crises. Under direction, the FH Medic provides community-based crisis intervention services for children and adults with mental health and/or substance use needs on mobile crisis and mobile evaluation teams which includes direct client contact in the community, partnering with law enforcement, crisis intervention, field clinical assessments, outreach services, and other related duties as assigned.The FH team deals with a wide range of mental health-related crises, including conflict resolution, welfare checks, substance abuse, suicide threats, and more, relying on trauma-informed de-escalation and harm reduction techniques. FH provides a non-police mobile response to mental health crises. Mobile crisis interventions are face-to-face, short-term, intensive mental health services provided during a mental health exacerbation. Our team is made up of a crisis worker, a medical professional, or a peacemaker trained in conflict resolution.

    Our services are limited to a 5-mile radius of Liberty City and include:

    • First Aid and Non-Emergency Medical Care
    • Resource Connection and Referrals
    • Transportation to Services

    Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

    • Work with FH Mobile Crisis Unit shifts providing outreach interventions, as dispatched by the Healing and Justice Center.
    • Assume primary responsibility for making mental health assessments of clients and for providing crisis intervention and de-escalation.
    • Responds to crisis calls, conduct clinical assessment, risk of harm, and determine appropriate level of care service and referrals.
    • Provide field assessment, evaluation, and intervention for adults, adolescents, and children at risk of psychiatric hospitalization.
    • Attend required department and clinic meetings and share in other responsibilities as assigned.
    • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and crisis communication/management
    • Maintain confidentiality, respect the boundaries of clients experiencing distress.
    • Make transport decisions regarding patient care, including driving a large passenger van.
    • Complete all required trainings.
    • Complete 120-day probation period.

    Skills and Education

    • Currently licensed as an EMT, RN, LPN, CNA, or PCT in the state of Florida
    • Two or more years’ experience in crisis intervention or delivery of mental health services in non traditional settings.
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population including impoverished and alienated persons.
    • Must be able to pass a stringent criminal background check and driving record review
    • Certification in First Aid & CPR/BLS, or complete certification within three months of hire
    • A sense of humor.
    • Ability to work with all levels of management and team members with diplomacy tact
    • Must be available to work evenings, and occasional weekends

    Language

    • Bilingual (English & Spanish), bicultural preferred
    • Strong written communication skills (e.g. reports, e-mails)
    • Excellent telephone and oral communication skills
    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, coworkers, clients and the general public

    Reasoning Ability

    • Sensitivity to cultural differences present in the organization’s/program’s service population
    • Ability to apply common sense and critical thinking to carry out instructions and make decisions within scope of authority
    • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

    ADA Compliance- Physical, Environmental, Cognitive & Psychological Requirements

    • Physical: Regularly sits up to 2-3 hours per day. Gets up and down frequently throughout the day to interface with others. Must have excellent hearing, speech and writing capabilities.
    • Environmental: Works alone, with and around others. Works mostly inside. Work environment is moderately noisy. Distractions are regular.
    • Cognitive: Required to read, write, compile, sort and analyze simple to moderately complex information. Independently assesses workload and prioritizes activities. Very strong organizational and planning skills. Able to communicate and resolve semi-complex problems independently. Excellent listening skills and ability to perform tasks requiring great attention to detail. Uses judgment and initiative, within defined limits of discretion, in making recommendations and decisions.
    • Psychological: Strong interpersonal and communications skills to deal with emotional, demanding or difficult people and/or situations. Regular exposure to high-stress situations with demands, deadlines, shifting priorities and multi-tasking. Excellent teamwork and proactive group participation are a necessity.
    • Accommodation Recommendations: A person in a wheelchair can perform in this position with assistance from other staff for some activities.

    The Healing and Justice Center is a community-based public safety program working to stop violence, increase access to mental health services and divert people from the criminal legal system.

    The Healing and Justice Center is a partnership between Dream Defenders, the Circle of Brotherhood, Dade County Street Response and Touching Miami with Love. Our services include: a mobile crisis unit, a free urgent care clinic, conflict mediation, youth programming and violence intervention.

    Salary and Benefits: This is a full time hourly position starting at $22.50/hour with an extremely competitive benefits package and generous personnel policies.
