    The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, several scientific research cores, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early-stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

    The Peer Support Navigator will be an active member of a multi-disciplinary team that provides peer support services to participants enrolled in the Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) study (PIs: Douglas Dean and Julie Poehlmann). This position will be involved in the recruitment, screening, consenting, and scheduling of participants and provide participants with individualized, ongoing guidance, and support in completing study requirements. They will develop a participant advocate relationship through sharing of similar lived experience, that will support and help guide the participant through study requirements. They will also help identify community resources pertinent to each participant and assist in navigating the use of those resources. The Peer Support Navigator will assist in developing formal and informal community support according to participants identified needs to complete study requirements and be responsible for understanding participant rights and observe all rules of confidentiality relating to clinical information and treatment, both internally and when dealing with external agencies and/or individuals.

    Responsibilities:

    Instructs and/or assists individuals and families engaged in various outreach programs. Delivers research-based educational programs to support and empower people where they live and work. Provides general support on public issues for the benefit of the community. Strives to expand and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences.
    • 10% Teaches culturally relevant educational programs to adults and youth using learner-centered activities and lessons
    • 25% Implements initiatives and events that serve the target audience
    • 10% Procures and maintains course materials and supplies
    • 25% Tracks program evaluation and incorporates feedback for improvement
    • 10% Helps design marketing materials and promotions for programs
    • 20% Provide study participants with individualized, ongoing guidance, and support in completing study requirements.

    Required
    H.S. Diploma
    Minimum of High School Diploma or GED is required.

    Qualifications:

    Qualified applicants will have the following required experience:
    - Must be fluent in English and Spanish.
    - Professional experience working with Spanish speaking and/or multi-lingual families.
    - A valid driver's license that meets UW Risk Management standards is required for the purpose of meeting staff and participants in person when necessary.

    Well-qualified applicants will have the following preferred qualifications:
    - Experience working directly with people in a service-oriented field is beneficial.
    - Experience working with families, pregnant women, infants, and young children, especially in a Dane County based organization serving Spanish-speaking families.
    - Experience with research data collection, including questionnaires, interviews, or behavioral assessments, preferably in pregnant women and/or infants and young children.
    - Proactive problem solving and planning.
    - Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    - Excellent interpersonal, organization, written, and verbal communication skills.
    - Strong attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
    - Ability to work well with others.

    License/Certification:

    Required
    Certification from the state agency in peer support for Substance Use Disorders is required.

    Work Type:

    Full or Part Time: 50% - 100%

    It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

    Salary:

    Minimum $43,680 ANNUAL (12 months)

    Additional Information:

    Occasional (1-2 times a week) travel to Milwaukee, and neighboring areas for recruitment and outreach will be required. Other in-state travel may be required for meetings, conferences, and outreach activities.

    A Criminal Background Check will be performed.

    Must complete HIPAA training and receive certification within the first 5 days of employment and annually thereafter.
