      Retirement Contribution: Corvallis School District participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP) on behalf of its employees. Upon eligibility, the district contributes 6% of an employee’s salary to their Individual Account Program (IAP). Eligibility is defined as working at least six full calendar months in a qualifying position. Part-time employees working at least six months and 600 hours in a calendar year will qualify.
      Note: This position is open until filled with earliest review of June 27, 2022.

      PURPOSE: The Food and Nutrition Services Culinary Supervisor oversees all of the culinary aspects of the district’s school nutrition programs including recipe development and testing, menu assessment and planning, food production, quality and quantity controls, and culinary training. This position requires thorough knowledge of nutrition and health standards, large scale food production, safety and sanitation practices, and culinary training. This position reports to the Food and Nutrition Services Manager and supervises the work of food and nutrition services employees at various district work sites.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
      • Develops, creates, writes, and standardizes recipes and food specifications.
      • Creates quality and quantity controls. Assures quality and quantity controls are in place and followed.
      • Assists in the planning of cost-effective and appealing menus that encourage participation in school nutrition programs and maintain nutrition integrity.
      • Works with staff, parents, and physicians to plan menus for children with special dietary needs.
      • Assists with equipment and product selection for foods used in the school nutrition programs.
      • Tests recipes and techniques for food preparation and presentation to ensure quality control.
      • Assists in the recruitment, hiring, supervision, and evaluation of staff.
      • Evaluates staff culinary training needs and assists in the planning and implementation of training programs.
      • Provides culinary training to staff to ensure highest quality food safety, food production, presentation, and employee safety.
      • Enhances staff understanding of cooking, baking, and the culinary arts.
      • Monitors and evaluates the preparation of food to ensure specifications are followed.
      • Ensures coordination between the central kitchen and school sites.
      • Retrains staff, as needed, in food production, use and care of equipment, and presentation techniques.
      • Oversee the development of special department programs, including catering, taste tests and other events to promote nutrition and maintain interest in the school nutrition programs.
      • Maintains food cost control through planning, forecasting, ordering, and receiving.
      • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to school nutrition programs, and collaborates with the Food and Nutrition Services Manager to respond to any identified deficiencies.
      • Develops and implements procedures to help provide greater program effectiveness.
      • Responsible for food and supply orders and ensuring purchasing standards are maintained.
      • Maintains good working relationships with vendors.
      • Responsible for inventory management and ensures inventory control systems are maintained.
      • Utilizes technology as related to job responsibilities.
      • Supervises, coaches and evaluates culinary and warehouse staff.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.       Minimum Qualifications

      • Must possess, at a minimum, an Associate’s Degree in a related field and five years of progressive culinary management experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the job functions.
      • Experience with large scale food production and culinary instruction is preferred.
      • Must be able to travel among district facilities and meet district driving standards for the position.
      • Must possess a current food handler’s card.
      • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

      Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      • Knowledge of and ability to understand, interpret, apply and explain complex federal and state regulations governing school nutrition programs.
      • Knowledge of nutritional literacy and understanding of fresh fruits and vegetables, minimally processed foods, healthy proteins, and alternative foods for dietary restrictions.
      • Ability to develop recipes, menus and plan food preparation based on sound principles of nutrition, customer acceptability, and cost control.
      • Methods of quality food preparation, service and storage, including safe and proper temperature of heated foods and cost controls.
      • Methods of proper operation and maintenance of food service equipment.
      • Methods for developing, training, and maintaining standard culinary operating procedures.
      • Strategies for cost-effectiveness and efficiency, evaluating alternatives and developing sound recommendations for improvement.
      • Principles and practices of effective management and supervision.
      • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
      • Ability to exercise sound, expert independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
      • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations.
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, vendors, parents, students and others encountered in the course of work.
      • Ability to work with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
      • Working knowledge of technology and software for school nutrition programs, such as point of sale software, menu and nutrition analysis software, Excel, Word, email, electronic document storage, and other applications.
      • Ability to understand the district’s instructional goals and carry out work in a manner that supports those goals.
      • Ability to analyze and adapt to changing priorities to support organizational needs.

      The position works both in an office environment as well as in school kitchens and cafeterias. The noise level in the work environment could be usually moderate to occasionally high.       Travel between various district sites is required. Occasional attendance at meetings or activities outside of normal working hours is required, as are mandatory trainings and educational events sponsored by the district.
