    Position Summary

    Under limited supervision, oversees, manages, and supervises group responsible for performing engineering work associated with system planning and protection of Grant PUD's transmission and distribution infrastructure with a focus on reliability, safety, efficiency, and adherence to general engineering best practices.


    The Engineering Manager is the first management level in the engineering job series. The Engineering Manager provides daily management responsibilities over aspects of Grant PUD's engineering needs. This position is responsible for overseeing electrical, mechanical, or structural engineering work performed by individual contributors.

    Job Responsibilities 

    Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Plan, assign, train, and instruct the work of other professional engineers; prioritize and allocate work assignments to achieve established strategies; provide input on the development of engineering standards, guidelines, studies, calculations and specifications; ensure individual contributors are utilized appropriately and are trained, capable, and qualified to execute work assigned; participate in teams of subject matter experts to create and administer policies and procedures governing Grant PUD's power delivery engineering tasks; provide recommendations on any controversial engineering decisions that affect critical aspects of Grant PUD's infrastructure; make decisions on basic to complex engineering escalations affecting critical infrastructure; contribute in departmental initiatives to develop, implement, and achieve strategic plans and initiatives to improve staffing competency, efficacy, and professionalism.
    • Manage planning and protection of Grant PUD's power delivery infrastructure and assets; ensure all documentation is properly stored in Grant PUD's engineering application databases; function as main point of contact in the area of system planning and protection with various internal and external stakeholders ensuring proper relationship development and communication policies are followed during all interactions; oversee contractors and consultants performing related engineering work.
    • Be an experienced, knowledgeable resource for lower-level staff within the engineering department, as well as other areas of Grant PUD; provide general guidance and training for non-subject matter experts; cultivate, foster, and maintain positive working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, and other stakeholders to gain their cooperation and support; understand and adhere to compliance requirements for this position that may include laws, regulations, security guidelines, Grant PUD policies, and procedures.
    • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
    • Demonstrated commitment to Grant PUD’s mission, vision, values, strategic plan and Vision 2021. The incumbent should be familiar with these organizational priorities and behave in a way that aligns with these expectations.
    • Understands and adheres to compliance requirements for this position that may include laws, regulations, security guidelines, Grant PUD policies & procedures.
    • Actively support and participate in all aspects of our safety program, including but not limited to:
      • Following all safety policies and procedures;
      • Alerting supervisors and coworkers to unsafe or hazardous working conditions;
      • Reporting any safety incidents or close calls within 24 hours to your supervisor; and
      • Accepting feedback from supervisors and coworkers regarding your own safety performance.
    • Actively support programs and actions that improve our Safety Culture by:
      • Supporting the presence of safety in your Department (e.g. Include safety messages in business conversations; begin meetings as appropriate with a safety minute).
      • Ensuring supervisors are monitoring the safety actions of their teams (such as completing safety training, reporting incidents timely, etc.).
      • Being viewed as a safety champion by stopping work if necessary, promoting safety activities (Continuous improvement team processes, Safety & Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) activities, etc.).
      • Acknowledging compliant safety behaviors and good safety performance from members of your team(s).

    Job Requirements 

    Educational Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering field; AND ten (10) years of engineering or engineering management experience.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of - Power system engineering principles and their application to electric utility operational practices; protection relaying principles including short circuit analysis, time-current coordination, relay settings and integration with SCADA systems; electric system studies for purposes of planning, compliance and connection of new load or generation; staff development methods set to engage team members and promote meaningful performance improvements; project management tools and techniques; technical competences with an attention toward detail. 

    Skills in -exercising good judgement and making well informed decisions under pressure; written and oral interpersonal communication; workflow and time management; utilizing MS office products; GIS and AutoCAD software, tools, and applications.

    Special Requirements

    • A valid Washington State driver’s license with no restrictions is required.
    • A Washington State Professional Engineer license preferred.

    Physical Requirements

    Majority of work is performed in a standard office setting, with some field work that may require operation of a vehicle.
