The Division of Student Affairs consists of over 200 employees including: Student Affairs, Student Health and Wellness, University Career Center, Housing and Residence Life, and the Office of African American Affairs; and several units reporting to the Dean of Students - all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known.

    The Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) leads a team supporting the approximately 28% of undergraduate students who are members of one of the University’s 60 Greek-letter organizations. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students and Director sets and leads the mission, vision, and strategy for FSL, and provides leadership, training, assessment, and management of the unit. The Assistant Dean and Director will oversee program design, implementation, and support services for students and chapters that are part of four governing councils: the Inter-Fraternity, Inter-Sorority, National Pan-Hellenic, and Multicultural Greek Councils. Partnering with FSL staff, students, university offices, and external partners, the Assistant Dean and Director will focus on the areas of program/leadership development, student support, advising, member development, risk management, and responsible student self-governance. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to manage internal and external relations and lead the unit with a commitment to inclusion and belonging. This position is a full-time, twelve-month University Managerial and Professional Staff position with benefits.

    Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

    Unit Leadership
    • Provide strategic direction for Fraternity and Sorority Life in the areas of leadership development, risk management and harm reduction, diversity and inclusion, membership intake/recruitment and education, problem/conflict resolution, and community planning.
    • Lead the strategic planning process, budget management, and allocation of resources for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
    • Supervise full-time professional staff - develop a cohesive team and provide opportunities for growth and development through coaching, feedback, recognition, and opportunities for learning and skill development
    • Enrich the fraternity and sorority experience by supporting the University’s strategic plan.
    • Manage and guide the use of assessment, evaluation, and program data for the improvement of current initiatives and development of new initiatives.
    • Oversee chapter expansion, establishment, and re-establishment processes.
    • Establish, disseminate, and interpret University policies and procedures pertaining to fraternity and sorority chapters and councils.


    Advising and Support
    • Provide leadership, direction, and advising to Inter-fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council, and Order of Omega.
    • Serves as the primary advisor for the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Councils.
    • As part of the office’s chapter coaching model, serve as a “chapter liaison” to chapters affiliated with all four governing councils.
    • Respond to behavioral incidents or crisis incidents involving fraternity or sorority chapters as appropriate; assist with incident management and support in the wake of student incidents or crisis that have impact upon the Greek community.


    Partnerships and Collaboration
    • Serve as a member of the University’s Hazing Evaluation Panel charged with reviewing hazing allegations, assist with hazing investigations as called upon, and assist with coordination of state-required hazing education for potential new members of student organizations with a new member process.
    • Collaborate with students, alumni volunteers/councils, (inter)national headquarters, property managers/house corporations, and university partners to execute goals and vision for the unit.
    • Serve in various capacities on departmental and divisional committees to educate and advocate on behalf of FSL.
    • Create and establish ongoing methods for engaging on-Grounds partners in the advising, leadership development, and programming of Greek communities.


    Qualifications:

    Required Education and Experience
    • Education: Master's degree. A degree in higher education or student development is preferred.
    • Experience: At least six years of directly related job experience. Previous experience as an Assistant/Associate Director in a Fraternity/Sorority office with supervisory experience is preferred.


    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Developed ability to supervise and work alongside students and student leaders within a highly student self-governed environment.
    • Direct experience with all four Greek councils.
    • Experience creating a welcoming environment for diverse student populations, facilitating educational programming on inclusive practices, and working with culturally-based organizations.
    • Awareness of specific trends and issues affecting fraternity and sorority communities, including legal issues, programming, and national councils.
    • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, inclusion, and belonging.
    • Strong oral, digital and written communication skills.
    • Ability to coordinate resources, evaluate information, and identify alternative solutions.
    • Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills, including proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, determine priorities, and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to develop mutually beneficial relationships with various University partners (e.g. faculty, staff, school deans).
    • Personal characteristics including innovation, creativity, the ability to work with diverse groups of people, being a self-starter who can thrive in an environment that is developing, growing, and changing.
    • Must be flexible and willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary and recognize the need to do so independently.
    • Understanding student development, identity development, intersections, and complexity of social identities.
    • Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making.


    The anticipated hiring range for this position is $75,000.00 to $90,000.00 and is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is an exempt-level position with UVa benefits . Employees’ benefits package highlights include:
