Title: AmeriCorps USDA Forest Service Off Highway-Vehicle (OHV) Trail Crew
Start: June 3, 2024 – October 18, 2024
Stipend: $630 living stipend per week $100 housing stipend per week
Term: 20 week, 40 hours a week
Location: Based out of the USDA Forest Service Ouray Ranger District Montrose, CO
Status: 675-hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Schedule: Individual Placement AmeriCorps members service hours typically follow Monday - Friday service schedule but may include weekends or evenings based on the specific needs of the service site.

Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects primarily on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
Program Overview:
The USDA Forest Service has an overall mission of “Caring for the Land and Serving People.” The Montrose Field Office is one of 17 field offices in Colorado, serving Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel Counties. The Montrose Field Office area covers 2,600,960 acres in beautiful southwest Colorado. Elevations here can range from 4,570 to 14,150 feet above sea level and the climate is quite variable.
The mission of the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trails Program is to provide the public with exceptional recreational opportunities on public lands and OHV trails through responsible use, practices, and principles. The goal of the program is to provide and maintain OHV trails that are enjoyable and safe for use. Through implementing sustainable methods and practices on trail constructions and maintenance the public and surrounding community will benefit. The Individual Placement (IP) will get the opportunity to serve along side the Forest Service and have access to internal trainings. Throughout the internship individuals will understand the need for multiple use trails and how users can enjoy their desired recreating experience together, understand sustainable trail management and feel accomplishment by collaborating with a team of diverse goals and objectives.
