    The incumbent will perform simple, routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities including. Operating light trucks to transport materials and equipment to park facilities. Performing routine maintenance such as janitorial, minor carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical work to public use areas and administrative facilities. Assisting higher graded maintenance workers to accomplish jobs including safely using and maintaining simple hand tools and handheld power tools. The incumbent will also be required to be an active member of the parks Hazardous Response Team.

    Padre Island National Seashore was established in 1962 to protect the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world, and the park's more than 130,000 acres host a rich variety of cultural and natural resources. Located between the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre, Padre Island contains coastal prairie, wetland, and wind tidal flat habitats. Recreational opportunities include saltwater fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, and birding.     The park is located approximately 25 miles southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas (population of the metropolitan area is approximately 430,000), 170 miles southeast of San Antonio, and 240 miles southwest of Houston. Corpus Christi has all the amenities of a small city, including a wide variety of housing, shopping, and recreational opportunities, including an aquarium, museums, sporting events, concerts, and botanical gardens. Several school districts, hospitals, and universities/colleges are located within 30 miles of the park boundary.     Conditions of Employment

    • U.S. Citizenship required.

    • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
    • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
    • You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
    • The incumbent will also be required to be an active member of the parks Hazardous Response Team. As a member of the Hazardous Response Team the incumbent will be required to undergo and pass an annual medical monitoring exam and be fully trained in OSHA's 29 CFR HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operation) along with respirator protection, chemical analysis and field characterizations. The incumbent is required to receive training and to obtain certificates in the following within one year of acceptance of this position: Hazardous Communication; Respirator Protection; OSHA's 40-hour HAZWOPER; Chemical Analysis and Field Characterization

A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

    Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb or work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

    Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
