The City Forester position is a supervisory skilled work position in the Park & Recreation Department. The Forester performs work in the development, rehabilitation and maintenance of trees, flowers and shrubbery on City of Youngstown property. Supervision is exercised over a moderate-sized group of skilled and unskilled employees. Work is performed in accordance with established policies, procedures and technical guidelines under the general supervision of the administrative director; however, considerable initiative and independent judgment must be exercised in developing work methods and procedures.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Plans, organizes, and directs activities related to acquisition, planting, growing, maintenance, and removal of trees, flowers and shrubs on City of Youngstown property, including but not limited to parks and right-of-ways. Develops, prepares and recommends long range and short range planning and maintenance programs. Performs field inventory of trees, flowers and shrubs. Analyzes data regarding inventory and prepares reports in accordance with tree maintenance plans and ordinances of the City of Youngstown.Directly, supervises and assists work crews performing tree maintenance, pruning, removal, spraying and planting of City trees.Enforces laws of the City of Youngstown, as authorized and directed by ordinance. Addresses tree related concerns and complaints of the public. Responds to emergency calls during and after regularly scheduled work hours.Presents educational engagements for civic and social groups, as requested, on the care of trees, flowers and shrubs; provides the public with general and specialized tree care information.Requisitions necessary equipment and supplies; maintains inventories; prepares and maintains necessary records and reports of equipment and supplies.Considerable knowledge of insects, parasites, and diseases that attack trees and the composition and use of insecticides, fungicides, and disinfectants for their control. Considerable knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of equipment use in tree maintenance work.
