Wastewater Collection-Lift Station Operator

    Under general direction, the Lift station Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance and
    repair of all Wastewater Collections Systems which includes: lift stations, manholes, wastewater
    gravity lines, force mains, reclaimed water distribution systems, installation and replacement of
    reclaimed water meters, repairs of reclaimed water mains and services throughout the City of McAllen
    and City of Alton. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work and is
    responsible for generating daily reports and record keeping on equipment and material used in the
    Collection Department.
    Job Responsibilities
    1. Operates and maintains wastewater lift stations including pumps, controls, valves, motors and ventilation equipment, etc.
    2. Performs preventative maintenance such as, lubrication, painting, checking oil levels, etc. Inspection of lift station equipment daily.
    3. Observes the integrity and functional operation of all lift stations system components, assesses the need for corrective action and implement or initiates corrective actions as required.
    4. Log and records daily each Lift station's operational data.
    5. Prepares written reports and documentation on unusual operating situations or incidents.
    6. Assist in setting up traffic cones and barricades.
    7. Coordinates, transports and set up bypass pumping and Lift station pump around as needed during mechanical, electrical (power failure) and emergency situations such as inclement weather, such as heavy rainfall, tropical storms, hurricanes.
    8. Removes on a routine basis pump inspection plates and cleans/clears obstructions.
    9. Performs a variety of construction duties such as metal, masonry, digging, carpentry work to rehabilitate and maintain the wastewater collection system.
    10. Installation and/or repair of wastewater gravity lines, force main, manholes, manhole covers, reclaim water distribution mains, services, reclaim water meters, etc.
    11. Performs building maintenance and grounds keeping duties.
    12. Performs confined space entries when required.
    13. Televise gravity line and manholes using remote camera equipment.
    14. Perform sewer line locates using maps.
    15. Performs cross-training and back-up services for other departmental positions and other work assignments as assigned.
    16. May operate a heavy equipment vehicle, with valid commercial driver's license, if applicable.
    17. Performs other related duties as assigned to enhance the overall operations and services of the department. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.
    2. Job requires a current, valid Texas Class C driver's license. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B is preferred.
    3. Lift Station Operator with a TCEQ Wastewater Collection License I or TCEQ WW License D or higher preferred.
    4. Lift Station Operator Trainee with at least one year experience in mechanical or electrical or technical school experience preferred.
    5. Must be able to obtain a TCEQ Wastewater Collection I License within one (1) year of employment.
    6. Required to maintain TCEQ License with continuous education classes (30 hours every three years).
    7. Job requires a basic knowledge of equipment operations, basic computer skills, and the ability to make independent decisions.
    8. Must be customer service oriented with some contact with the public.
    9. Must have basic knowledge of use of hand and power tools.
    10. Knowledge of construction in installation and repair of wastewater collection systems items preferred.
    11. Knowledge of wastewater characteristic preferred.
    12. Must be computer literate with basic knowledge of usage of general office equipment.
    13. Must have basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment.
    14. Bilingual, English and Spanish preferred.
    15. Backhoe operating experience preferred.
    16. Assists in other job-related work when assigned.
    Physical Requirements
    1. Must be able to lift sixty (60) pounds occasionally. Additional Information
    1. This job is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
    2. Position has no supervisory responsibilities.
    3. Employee works five (5) days, 40-hour work weeks as well as rotating shifts as assigned for Stand-by work, plus weekends, holidays, and during extreme weather conditions.
    4. Employee must be available by phone to come into work during an emergency, if necessary.
