Foundation Director directs the execution of the vision, strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, and grantmaking operations that support the overall objectives of a foundation. Defines the goals and tactics for fundraising campaigns and program initiatives. Being a Foundation Director represents the foundation to the public and media to communicate its mission, values, and accomplishments. Maintains positive relationships with foundation stakeholders, including the board of directors, grantees, community leaders, donors, and prospective donors. Additionally, Foundation Director oversees grantmaking operations, including developing grant guidelines, reviewing grant applications, and managing the grant evaluation process. Manages foundation programs and initiatives that align with the foundation's mission and values. Implements systems for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the foundation's grantmaking and programs. Ensures all foundation activities comply with applicable laws, reporting requirements, and regulations. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Foundation Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Foundation Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Lutheran Social Services of Southern California began in December 1944 when a group of Lutheran congregations in San Diego came together to discuss how to better assist families in need. Today LSSSC serves thousands of individuals and families throughout Southern California with over 70 different programs/services at nearly 20 different locations.     Job Summary: 

    This position is responsible for the full range of activities related to the generation of organizational revenue from non-government sources through the submission of grant requests for funding. These activities include research on and production of foundation funding opportunities that the organization is eligible to submit funding requests; the submission of application/request for funds from those funding sources; and interdepartmental collaboration to ensure that the funds are expended timely and in accordance with any funder requirement and the proper reporting of such is communicated to funder. The grant writer will be evaluated based on the responsibilities below with emphasis: on the number of identified grant opportunities; the number of proposals submitted; the success rate of submitted grant proposals; and the award amounts of successful proposals. This position will primarily work on private foundation and corporate grant opportunities but may include some government opportunities as needed or requested.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

    · Follows any specific standard operating process for the submission of requests for funding.

    · Researches and identifies new corporate and private funding prospects to match.

    · organizational priorities.

    · Generates high-quality proposals, narratives, applications and supporting documents in response to solicitations.

    · Remains consistent with all policies and procedures of LSSSC, and the requirements and guidelines of the funding agencies.

    · Generates revenues for LSSSC programs through timely submission of well-researched, well written and well documented grant proposals.

    · Maintains grant database and enters and monitors tracking data for all relevant metrics including grants applied for and awarded.

    · Maintains quality results by using templates, following proposal-writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone.

    · Maintains primary responsibility for grant schedules and tracking grants.

    · Serves as a liaison to all foundation/corporate funding agencies and organizations.

    · Works with appropriate personnel to research, develop, write, and submit letters of inquiry, concept papers and grant proposals.

    · Coordinates and follows-up on the progress of submitted proposals.

    · Coordinates with the Fiscal Office to create expenditure and income budgets to accompany proposals.

    · Develop Supporting Materials – Create budgets, budget narratives, project timelines, Gantt charts, project schedules, project scopes of work, letters of support, project site maps and project photo pages, and required forms as-needed.

    · Multitask – Manage execution of multiple grant applications for multiple clients within the same time-period.

    · Develop a professional relationship with internal and external staff members; and

    · Work Efficiently – Deliver assignments within quoted project hours.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field preferred.

    • Three years’ experience in grant writing or fundraising.
