    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a variety of support to the Planning Department and Project Management with regard to planning and environmental issues, by use of GIS technology.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    • Develops methods and models to address planning and environmental issues.
    • Coordinates database information with Gaston County.
    • Prepares maps, plats, and other statistical reports, and illustrative presentations.
    • Develops long-range plans for enhancement of GIS and performs project management of the same.
    • Researches, coordinates, programs and analyzes data; Performs GPS field work as required.
    • Develops, operates, and maintains City's GIS system.
    • Manages multi-layered GIS database.
    • Keeps simple records as assigned.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: This position involves sedentary work requiring the employee to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; use a computer; and do extensive reading. An employee in this position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, and spelling; must have good attention to detail in order to maintain and enter data in a GIS database; must have written and oral communication skills for creating and presenting data reports; ability to use judgment in organizing and establishing arrangement and format; ability to organize and effectively process and maintain records and files activities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

    ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in geography, computer science, engineering, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
