Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice.     Summary:

    Coordinates genetics services, engaging in direct patient care and providing administrative support to genetics service for Nothern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center Pediatric and Adult Genetics Clinic.

    Responsibilities:

    • Triages referrals for and coordinates various sub-specialty genetics clinics such as prenatal clinic, cardiology clinic, and cancer clinic.
    • Prepares medical records for providers including but not limited to preliminary development of pedigrees and obtaining additional records necessary for evaluation as needed.
    • Responsible for monitoring gaps in service, monitoring established quality measures, and producing related reports.
    • Assists with prior authorizations and benefits investigations.
    • Monitors result returns and call out results to patients under supervision of a genetic counselor or geneticist.
    • Contacts patients to arrange appropriate follow-up after genetics consultations.
    • Assures web presence reflects services offered, in coordination with Community Relations and Lead Physician.
    • Coordinates appointments, including scheduling, registration, sample collection for testing, follow up, etc.
    • Coordinates meetings with providers and other specialty staff and/or laboratory representatives, as needed.
    • Maintains and safeguards confidentiality of information including patient, personnel, and organizational data/records.
    • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets data per business needs.
    • Records, maintains, distributes, and prepares documents or information.
    • Provides prompt and effective service to internal and external customers.
    • Attends educational sessions, workshops, and other continuing education opportunities to enhance or gain new skills.
