Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. Provides in-home and or office based crisis oriented treatment and support to families.
Conduct thorough, accurate mental health assessments documenting findings according to ODMH standards
Works a 40-hour, non-structured work week, which may include evenings and weekends
Provides family education, skills, training, and individual, family and group therapy using brief, goal-oriented treatment plans
Utilize active listening techniques to help families de-escalate and begin setting priorities
Provides advocacy work with schools, court, and other social service agencies as needed
When appropriate, arranges for follow-up and ongoing case management after termination to ensure that referral to ongoing services occurs smoothly
Attends staff meetings and in-service training by employer
Attends and participates in weekly case consultation sessions and business meetings as necessary.
Keeps thorough and up-to-date client records and charting
Carries cell phone as needed
Is on 24-hour call to families during intervention (unless alternative coverage is secured).
Cooperates in efforts to provide support and back-up for fellow therapists
Is available for referrals from after hours on a regular basis
Dresses appropriately per agency guidelines
Does necessary communication with insurance companies and funding agencies as needed
Assumes any other responsibilities as may be appropriate as directed by the Clinical Director
A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Social work or counseling-related field.
Licensed, certified or registered individuals as identified by appropriate licensing, certifying or registering bodies.
