Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. Duties:
- Provide counseling services to clients both in individual and group settings
- Conduct assessments to determine clients' needs and develop individualized service plans
- Coordinate and monitor the delivery of services to ensure client needs are met
- Advocate for clients and connect them with appropriate resources and support systems
- Assist clients in accessing healthcare, childcare, workforce development, and other essential services
- Utilize mentoring and motivational interviewing techniques to empower clients and promote self-sufficiency
- Supervise and monitor client progress, making adjustments to service plans as needed
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records
Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in social work or a related field preferred
- Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals involved in child welfare, Medicare recipients, and Section 8 housing participants
- Knowledge of community resources and ability to make appropriate referrals
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
