Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. Requirements:
- Master's degree in Counseling or related field
- Eligible for Medicaid reimbursement
- Experience working with individuals with autism or behavioral health issues
- Knowledge of ICD-10 coding for accurate diagnosis and billing purposes
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Skills:
- Data collection and analysis for treatment planning
- Patient assessment and evaluation skills
- Knowledge of behavioral health theories and interventions
- Proficiency in psychotherapy techniques and modalities
- Familiarity with medical record documentation standards
- Crisis intervention skills for handling emergency situations
