Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice.     Core Functions and Duties:

    • Assist students in developing college and career plans, including researching and applying to colleges, exploring career options, and understanding financial aid and scholarship options.

    • Organize parent/guardian information nights and communicate regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on students' progress and offer guidance on supporting their child's academic and personal development.
    • Ensure consistent communication and resources are provided to students, parents/guardians, and employees to enhance communication and keep everyone informed.
    • Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
    • Stay current with best practices in counseling and participate in professional development activities.
    • Provide occasional individual and group counseling to students on a variety of issues, including academic, social, emotional, college, and career-related concerns.
    • Conduct assessments to identify students' strengths, needs, and areas for growth.
    • Develop and implement intervention strategies to support students' academic success and personal development.
    • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to create a positive and supportive school climate.
    • Provide crisis intervention and support as needed.

    Competencies/Qualifications:

    • Master's degree in counseling or a related field preferred.
    • Experience with the college admission process and career readiness programs preferred.
    • Experience working as a school counselor, preferably in a university setting.
    • Current state licensure or certification as a school counselor.
    • Knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and practices.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

    Compensation:

    • Salary is determined using the Faculty Pay Scale, based on education level and years of experience (scale ranges from BA, Tier 1: $55,862 to MA 90 or Ph.D., Tier 25 : $106,978 - for full-time position).
