    The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Washington Geological Survey (Geology) Division. Are you someone who enjoys field work and wants to make a positive impact on local communities by contributing to seismic resiliency at Washington’s public schools? The Washington Geological Survey (WGS) is seeking a geophysicist to join a team working on our School Seismic Safety Project. The project plays an important role in assessing seismic vulnerability at public schools across the state of Washington by collecting valuable geologic/geophysical information to be used by school districts, engineers, and researchers responsible for evaluating the earthquake resiliency of school structures. The successful applicant will lead a team of scientists charged with the associated data collection for seismic site characterization using geophysical methods and techniques to accurately assess each campus. This position requires knowledge of geophysical methods such as MASW, MAM, and HVSR, experience with field instrumentation and troubleshooting, GIS, and database management. You will be expected to work independently to meet project objectives. This position requires interaction with the public and interested parties, so good communication skills are a must. The WGS is a diverse group of passionate and dedicated scientists working to collect and provide geologic information for the public. This project is a great opportunity for anyone looking to practice applied geophysics and expand their knowledge of Washington geology.Responsibilities:

    Required Qualifications: 
    • Bachelor’s degree in geology, geophysics, geological sciences, engineering geology, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or closely related degree;
      OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
    • At least 1 year of combined geologic and/or geophysical experience with an emphasis on geophysical data collection and processing. Geophysical experience includes working knowledge of geophysical field instruments such as seismic monitoring equipment, gravity, magnetics, HVSR, and GPR, as well as working knowledge of geophysical data processing software. Graduate experience may be considered instead of work experience.
    • Documented knowledge in GIS, geophysical processing software, and data management.
    • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
    • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
    • Ability to work outdoors sometimes on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.

    Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
    • Field (outdoor – usually >85%) and office (indoor – usually <15%). This position requires repeated swinging of a 16 lb. sledgehammer onto a metal plate resting on the ground daily and requires the ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs.). Field terrain is usually flat grassy ball fields but occasionally could include undulatory and uneven ground requiring moderate hiking carrying or moving equipment. This position is usually as part of a team with an assistant team member.
    • Extensive in-state, with occasional out-of-state
    • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
    Desired Qualifications:
    • Graduate degree in geology, geophysics, geological sciences, engineering geology, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related degree.
    • Experience using a magnetometer, gravimeter, seismic monitoring equipment, GPR, GPS, and GIS, and familiarity with standard lab equipment is required.
    • Washington State Professional Geologist License.
