    Background Check

    The Inspection Service criminal background check is conducted using United States information resources only (e.g., FBI fingerprint check, state and county checks). A criminal background check involves a 5-year inquiry for any location where the individual has resided, worked or gone to school within the United States or its territories. As a result of this limitation, the criminal background checks of individuals who have not resided in the United States or its territories for the preceding 5-years may not be considered complete. If the Inspection Service is unable to perform a complete background check because of residency outside the United States, such individuals will be ineligible for Postal employment.

     

    Functional Purpose

    Researches, writes, and edits a variety of U.S. Postal Inspection Service communications media for internal and external (national) distribution.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    1. Develops, writes, and edits brochures, flyers, booklets, reports, and other print, multi-media or social media publications designed to inform Inspection Service employees, Postal Service employees, and the public.
    2. Edits and updates all official Inspection Service numbered publications and numbered forms to maintain effectiveness and relevancy.
    3. Creates, edits, and updates reports and management briefings regarding Inspection Service objectives, progress and accomplishments.
    4. Creates, edits, and updates communication products for Inspection Service internal and external audiences, to include: intranet content, agency-wide emails, publications, presentations, brochures and fliers; and USPS internal and external channels, to include: USPS Blue and LiteBlue, website, and social media.
    5. Researches, writes, and edits Inspection Service presentations for various audiences to educate and promote awareness of schemes and scams, mail theft prevention, dangerous, illegal and/or prohibited mail items, and safety and security of USPS employees.
    6. Completes research, editing, and writing assignments under tight deadlines. Utilizes InSite program for tracking and prioritizing work projects.
    7. Conducts research on a variety of issues which affect the Inspection Service to determine impact on management, employees, and consumers; recommends article topics for incorporation into national and special publications.
    8. Performs editor duties on as needed basis, including obtaining final approvals, ensuring incorporation of last-minute changes, final proofreading, and editing articles for daily publications.
    9. Acts as primary liaison to the Material Distribution Center in Topeka, KS for the printing of official publications, posters, flyers, and brochures.
    10. Serves as a backup support for primary content creator for Inspection Service executives, the Inspection Service social media manager, and administrative staff.

    1. Ability to coordinate the work of employees in other units including providing guidance, organizing and monitoring the work, establishing effective work relationships and facilitating the flow of work-related information.
    2. SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Willingness to submit to a Tier 2 Moderate Scope Background Investigation (MBI) for security clearance. The investigation requires completion of a questionnaire, fingerprints for a criminal records check, and may require a drug test. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain the security clearance while holding the

    position.

    1. Ability to conduct research, including conducting interviews, to gather material for writing publications, speeches, and presentations.
    2. Ability to develop, write, and edit articles, reports and promotional and informational material under tight deadlines.
    3. Knowledge of journalism, communications, or public relations sufficient to relay information in a concise and clear manner, using the appropriate voice for multiple audiences and platforms.
    4. Ability to use word processing and photo editing software sufficient to develop, write, and edit articles.
    5. Knowledge of the creative production of web pages, pamphlets, brochures, posters, visual aids, and similar materials.
    6. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Possession of a Bachelor s or advanced degree in English or journalism, or a closely related field from a college or university accredited by a national or regional accreditation organization recognized and sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Education.

     

    Desirable Qualifications: Strong grasp of the English language, especially the rules of syntax, punctuation, and grammar. Professional writing and editing experience.

     

    **This position requires an MBI clearance. This process can take up to 8 weeks from the date the offer letter is returned**
