Groundskeeper, Sr. cuts and maintains lawns and grass. Rakes leaves and cares for plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. Being a Groundskeeper, Sr. determines the appropriate plants or shrubs for walkways or garden areas. Provides grounds maintenance in all seasons. Additionally, Groundskeeper, Sr. is responsible for snow and dirt removal. Keeps the grounds and environment of a facility in a clean, attractive, orderly, safe, and healthy condition. Operates light trucks and assorted power equipment. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on gardening and grounds equipment. May require horticultural training. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Groundskeeper, Sr. works under moderate supervision.       JOB DESCRIPTION

      Summary/objective
      To assist in all areas of grounds maintenance for providing a safe, neat, and clean environment on the campus.

      Essential functions
      • Maintain and grow the flower beds to ensure they meets expectations
      • Perform basic maintenance such as cutting the grass, emptying bins, managing weed control and leaf raking
      • Plant and nurture new trees, flowers, and various plants
      • Work with hand tools and basic light machinery such as plant vehicles, and small diggers
      • Operate truck, tractors, forklifts, backhoe and other equipment necessary to perform duties related to grounds keeping
      • Service all equipment as necessary
      • Maintain clean grounds by clearing litter from the flower beds and grounds
      • Assist in other areas of building maintenance as assigned

      Competencies
      • Plant Knowledge: Understanding the specific needs of various flowers including their preferred soil type, sunlight exposure, water requirements, and potential pests or diseases. Select appropriate plants for their garden and ensure they thrive.
      • Garden Design: Proficiency in planning and designing flower beds, considering factors such as color coordination, plant heights, bloom times, and overall aesthetic appeal. Create visually pleasing layouts that complement the landscape.
      • Maintenance Skills: Ability to perform essential garden maintenance tasks such as planting, watering, weeding, pruning, deadheading spent blooms, and fertilizing. Regular maintenance ensures the health and vitality of the flowers, promoting continuous growth and blooming.
      • Problem-Solving Abilities: Capacity to identify and address issues that arise in the garden, such as pest infestations, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, or environmental stressors. Effective problem-solving to take timely action to prevent damage and promote plant health.

      None

      Work environment
      The grounds maintenance worker typically works both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to inclement weather, noise and dust. A standard workweek as assigned by administration is required, but evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate activities or emergencies.

      Physical demands
      This position will require physically strenuous work. While performing the duties of this job, the grounds maintenance worker will be required to move/position objects up to 50 lbs. or more, perform extensive work which may include climbing to elevated surfaces and/or rooftops, driving maintenance vehicles and operation of other heavy equipment necessary to perform duties.

      Travel required
      Occasional travel within and outside of the Great Plains Technology Center district may be required for work at other school sites, professional development, and participation in other Great Plains Technology Center activities.

      Required education and experience
      • High school diploma or equivalency

      Preferred education and experience
      • Job-related experience within a specialized field having demonstrated increasing levels of responsibility
