    POSITION SUMMARY

    Responsible for the managing of all tasks related to the Weight Estimating and Weight Control Programs for all Company New Construction Projects, defining strategy in accordance with the Contracts and Specifications of each project and its execution, and management of the assigned staff, man-hour budgets, and project schedule.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers, the essential duties and responsibilities may be different than described.

    • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
    • As the Subject Matter Expert for Lightship Estimating and the effects on Centers of Gravity, while undertaking the necessary weight management activities, must be able to identify margin and weight consumption threats and the opportunities for weight reduction during the development of the design and detail engineering processes.
    • Prepare and issue project weight control procedures and reports following ESG and Customers’ specified formats, with attention to the following points:
    • Specify project requirements or Budget Weights and “Not To” Exceed weights following the requirements of the Project agreed ABWE (Allocated Baseline Weight Estimate).
    • Lay-out Contingencies to be applied during various phases of the project.
    • Definition of areas of responsibility in liaison with the involved disciplines and other Contractors and/or Vendors.
    • Operate and maintain the weights control database.
    • Coordinate and collect weight data from engineering disciplines by calculating weight from the detailed design drawings and production packages, other ESG Departments as necessary, Project Contractors and/or Vendors, and Government Furnished Equipment/Material.
    • Back up supplied input data for traceability and perform discipline, other ESG Departments, and Projects Contractors and/or Vendors weight audits (where applicable)
    • Prepare and issue project weight reports as required by Contract and Specifications.
    • Review design changes and change control documentation via ECNs, ECRs, RFIs, and IQs for weight implications.
    • Propose and organize any corrective actions due to deviations from acceptable weight values of budgets.
    • Liaise with all ESG Departments on Production and Program side on all weight-related matters, via Project and Contract protocols.
    • Conduct site visits and witness vendor-supplied materials weighing (as applicable and required) including Government Furnished Equipment.
    • Monitor as-built status and supervise module weighing as required.
    • Organize with Project Engineers and other members of other ESG departments to conduct weight review meetings, to elevate weight awareness and control by all personnel involved in the project.
    • Review and coordinate interfaces for CAD Weight Database (3D Model) data transfers to the weight control database.
    • Review and implementation of weight-saving proposals as required.
    • Maintain historical weight records.
    • Review and prepare correspondence related to areas of responsibility.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Directly and/or indirectly supervise employees assigned to the Weight Control Group. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

    • Optimizes Work Processes – Constantly assuring quality and process improvement.
    • Ensures that all supervised employees follow ESG Safety policies.
    • Ensures that self and supervised group follows ESG applicable policies.

    Job RequirementsREQUIREMENTS

    Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering discipline, plus a minimum of 10 years of experience in vessel design, in the use of Engineering Software for various types of Engineering analysis as structural calculations, sizing of mechanical components and stability, developing design drawings and/or 3D modeling using CAD Software’s, and having assisted or supervised production efforts during the construction of the vessels at various stages, including ship checks and verification of as-built conditions. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Three or more years of supervisory experience are desired. Proficiency in performing, accessing, and using 2D/3D software such AutoCAD, Ship Constructor, FORAN, and Software to handle various types of formatted Documents such as PDS/Adobe, etc., for verification of Vendor Data, Structural and Vessel Component, and Machinery Arrangements, Mechanical Drawings such as Piping and HVAC, Production Packages and Schedules, etc. Requires experience managing projects and supervising a team of professionals to perform the required tasks as described herein. A wide knowledge of Classification Rules, International codes, and standards such as ABS SVRs and NVR, DNV, API, AISC, ASTM, ISO, SAWE RP 14, and MIL Standards is required.

    Skills: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required. Ability to read and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

    Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from senior management, employees, and the public. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form. Proficiency in FORAN or similar software such as AVEVA, NUPAS CADMATIC, Ship Constructor, Navisworks, or similar CAD/CAM software is required. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, display attention to detail, and function as a team player.
