JOB SUMMARY:
To perform skilled, journey-level work in the fabrication, installation, replacement and repair of concrete, wooden structures and components in various municipal buildings and public works facilities; to include remodeling and some limited new construction work; to provide highly responsible technical assistance to the Public Works Division; and to lead and assign the work of other maintenance staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED :
Receives general supervision from a Maintenance Crew Supervisor.
Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level maintenance staff.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform a number of structural fabrication, installation, repair and maintenance tasks during maintenance, repair, remodeling and new construction assignments.
Lead and assist others in a variety of maintenance and repair work; provide training and direction as necessary.
Manufacture and install forms for various concrete projects; pour and finish concrete sidewalks, streets and catch basins.
Repair, replace and install various woodwork objects and related components including countertops, cabinets, doors, locks, closures and windows; install and replace flooring, ceiling, tile, carpet and roofing on municipal buildings.
Identify equipment needs or each assigned project; verify availability on construction site.
Assist in various building maintenance tasks such as roofing and water proofing.
Effectively utilize a variety of handheld and manual tools and equipment to complete assigned projects including hammers, screwdrivers, tape measures, drills and wrenches.
Clean and prepare project site area for construction.
Complete daily schedules and timesheets; report all daily work to appropriate division member.
Participate in a variety of activities involving travel between various city facilities, properties and other related external business and government agencies, which may include hauling materials and on-site construction.
Operate a variety of construction equipment including generators, backhoes, loaders, trucks, rollers, mixers, graders, saws and other similar equipment and machinery in constructing and repairing various materials and property.
Provide technical support to assist division staff in the completion of their duties and responsibilities; provide functional and technical direction as needed.
May cut or trim herbage as requested including trimming trees; remove and transport a variety of debris and excess material.
Make routine and emergency purchases as authorized and required.
Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of::
Principles, practices and procedures used in concrete, carpentry and building construction work.
Tools and equipment necessary for efficient and effective work performance.
Methods and techniques used in estimating time and materials for assigned projects.
Basic building code requirements.
Safe work practices.
Principles of functional and technical supervision and training.
Ability to: :
Perform highly skilled work in the trade area of concrete finishing and carpentry.
Work with independence and to make decisions relative to work methods, tools and materials.
Understand and interpret oral and written directions including construction drawings, plans and blueprints.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the course of work.
Use and care for tools and equipment used in maintaining and repairing building structures.
Estimate necessary materials and supplies with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- operating assigned equipment

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- walking, standing, stooping, crouching, kneeling or sitting for extended periods of time

- lifting moderately heavy materials and equipment
- operating assigned equipment.

- estimating time and materials needed for projects
- demonstrating intellectual capabilities

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience::
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience performing skilled carpentry and concrete work.
Training: :
Must have completed the twelfth grade and possess a high school diploma or have a GED.
License or Certificate::
Possession of or ability to obtain, an appropriate Texas Class C Driver's License.
