    Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.230 Specialist Series. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $59,200 -$82,100.
    Percent time: Full-time (100%)
    Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
    Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

    Position description

    The Department of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Bioinformatics Assistant Specialist or Associate Specialist. Under the direction of Professor Camilla Forsberg, the bioinformatics specialist will contribute to collaborative stem cell research at the Institute for the Biology of Stem Cells (IBSC). The bioinformatics specialist will participate in research projects by collaborating with graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to analyze high-throughput experiments to understand stem cell function, including bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, epigenomics assays such as ATACseq, and CRISPR-based screens. The specialist will also be expected to contribute to data management. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as ability and desire to work both independently and as part of a team are essential. Applicants who can implement commonly used 'omics tools with a high degree of autonomy are strongly encouraged to apply. A basic understanding of 'omics assays, Python and R, and of stem cell biology is ideal, but we also welcome candidates with a strong desire to learn on the job.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    B.S. with two years of research experience with analysis of 'omics' datasets; or M.S. with one year of research experience with analysis of 'omics' datasets. Degree must be in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field and equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
