HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Being an HVAC Mechanic follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Additionally, HVAC Mechanic maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The HVAC Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Design, construct, install and remove various facility HVAC equipment, systems, and HVAC components. Diagnose malfunctions in the facility’s HVAC equipment, systems, or HVAC components and take appropriate corrective and preventative actions. Maintain appropriate documentation for the facility’s HVAC equipment, systems, and HVAC components. Maintain appropriate inventory of replacement electrical equipment and systems. Maintain the hospital computerized maintenance management system through the appropriate completion of work orders and the recording of equipment history. Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on all facility HVAC and refrigeration equipment, systems, and components in accordance with prescribed procedures. Provide quality control for new installations or replacements of the facility’s HVAC and refrigeration equipment, systems and HVAC components performed by others. Respond to emergency situations such as electrical outages, HVAC equipment failures, ruptured pipe, fires or other hospital codes per hospital and department emergency response plans.
