HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Being an HVAC Mechanic follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Additionally, HVAC Mechanic maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The HVAC Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Vanderbilt University has an exciting opportunity for an HVAC Mechanic to join the Zone Maintenance Team in Plant Operations and Facilities Management. The HVAC team is responsible for heating and air conditioning systems, chill water systems, heating/hot water systems, steam systems, etc. As an HVAC Mechanic Lead you will be tasked with maintaining the comfort heating & cooling systems for academic buildings, dormitories, and athletic buildings on campus. As an HVAC Mechanic Lead in Plant Services, you will also troubleshoot & repair refrigerators, ice machines, air machines, chillers, and do preventative maintenance (PM) on all equipment.
Plant Operations provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.
Facilities annual budget exceeds $100 million in operating expenses and includes over 400 employees. Facilities manages major capital project expenditures totaling ~$125 million annually and facility renewal, replacement and large maintenance project expenditures totaling ~$20 million annually.
