Additionally, Hand Compositor/Typesetters may have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty with 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Happy Compromise Farm Sanctuary (HCF S) is a queer-founded and -operated nonprofit 501(c)(3) community farm and vegan animal sanctuary. We are a small org. doing big things!
At HCF S, we rescue animals from neglect, abuse, abandonment, and slaughter, as well as grow plant-based food and flowers for our community, which is located in a food desert. Everything we grow, we give away in our free farm stand as well as through other local distribution partners because we believe that food access is a basic human right. We farm using intensive, no till methods, and 95% of the work is done without machinery. We are currently focusing on extending growing seasons in our four-season climate, as well as expanding our reach in order to help more humans in need.

Summary:
The farm hand will work closely with our farm manager to seed, transplant, harvest, wash, and pack produce. Other tasks include soil preparation, weeding and irrigating, as well as some greenhouse and orchard work. The work can be strenuous, especially during the hottest days of the season, but also a lot of fun and always rewarding. We are looking for someone who enjoys physically demanding work outside, working collaboratively, continually learning and innovating, and has a genuine interest in food sovereignty.

Position overview:
- Work with farm manager to design and implement optimum crop production practices
- Continuously improve operations through process improvement and continued education
- Provide leadership and guidance to volunteers, fostering a positive and productive work environment
- Maintain a safe working environment and enforce safety protocols
Required skills:
- Strong knowledge of crop production principles and practices and their relationship to soil health
- Ability to perform all wash station and field tasks such as washing, packing, bagging, cultivating, weeding, planting, turning over beds, and general farm tasks
- Comfortable operating hand tools and power tools as needed
- Capable of repetitive physical work over varied terrain – can bend and kneel, work outside for long hours in a variety of weather conditions, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (team lift for heavier loads)
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization of farm buildings and grounds
- Ability to follow safety protocols and foster a safe working environment for all
- Strong communication skills; efficient; and possessing an upbeat, positive attitude
- Able to work well with others and also independently, while maintaining energy and focus
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, detail-oriented
- A valid driver’s license and ability to successfully pass a driver background check are required
