    JOB TITLE: Deaf/Hard of Hearing Consulting Assistant


    DEPARTMENT:            Regional Inclusive Services

    SUMMARY: 

    The job of DHH Assistant is to provide support to the DHH program with specific responsibilities for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of DHH students, assisting in implementing plans for instruction, providing trainings to build capacity, documenting activities and progress, creating materials, and working with the DHH Consultants to provide for the smooth operation of the program.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

      • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility and essential function satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Individual will hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable, insured transportation.

     

    EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE:

      • High School Diploma
      • Coursework at the college level preferred
      • Experience working in schools, EI/ECSE, or other appropriate training or experience preferred
      • Ability to communicate in ASL and/or experience working with DHH children preferred

     

    SKILLS:

    • Ability to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions
    • Knowledgeable of principals and techniques of Applied Behavior Analysis, intellectual and physical development of children, age-appropriate student activities, conflict resolution and stages of child development/behavior
    • Effective basic computer skills and ability to learn appropriate computer software and web-based applications
    • Experience or knowledge of developmentally delayed students
    • Demonstrated patience, warmth, and capacity for acceptance of children with special needs
    • Ability to communicate with diverse groups, including children who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing
    • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to create and maintain accurate records
    • Ability to assess situations and act swiftly and appropriately and with sound judgment for the safety and wellbeing of students and staff
    • Ability to work independently and work harmoniously with others
    • Exhibit cultural competency and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES and ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives
    2. Creates a variety of documents and materials (e.g. schedules, visual supports, observations) for the purpose of documenting activities and promoting student growth and development
    3. Serves as a technical resource to DHH Consultant for the purpose of providing support, information, and/or training and ensuring the student’s needs are met
    4. Perform other reasonable duties that from time to time may be assigned to meet the usual and unusual demands placed on the organization.

      • Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to data, students, parents, staff or IMESD patrons
      • Fulfill duties associated with Mandatory Reporting for suspected child abuse or neglect.
      • Have regular and punctual attendance at work and work activities, punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, following schedules, respond to management directions and solicits feedback to improve performance
      • Develop job skills necessary to meet changes in the position
      • This position may be required to travel to and from school locations in the IMESD service area.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

                                       

    • This position involves working inside the school setting, working outdoors in inclement weather, be exposed to behavior of angry students, and possibly participate in home visitations.
    • The typical school year runs mid-August through the first part of June. The typical work week is Monday – Friday.
    • The person in this position could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during his/her duties.
    • The person in this position may be exposed to inappropriate student behavior such as hitting, kicking, biting, yelling, cussing and verbal threats
    • Any changes in contract days will be stipulated in each individual contract. Salary and benefits to be established by the IMESD Classified Association in accordance with negotiated agreement with the IMESD Board of Directors. Schedule and assignments to be established by Department Director
