PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Head Mechanic is responsible for the mechanical maintenance of all school buses and other
vehicles as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED required
ASE Certified Mechanic/or Technical School Diploma, preferred Experienced with gasoline and diesel
engine repairs and overhauls Experienced with 5 speed transmission repairs
Experienced in vehicle air condition systems, using R-12 and R-134A Systems Experienced in
wheelchair lift repairs
Dependable and cooperative
Certified Bus Driver - CDL License - Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s license Class B with
Endorsements P (passenger) and S (school Bus)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision Ability to
operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts Ability to pass required bus driver safety
training Ability to operate bus
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Acceptable driving record
Region One ESC certification for bus drivers
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
• Assume shop supervisor's duties upon absence of shop supervisor.
• Assist, as needed, the shop supervisor.
• Supervise the cleaning and washing of transportation vehicles.
• Inform shop supervisor of needs, safety concerns, etc., immediately.
• Maintain good working relations in the work place.
• Be knowledgeable of emergency procedures.
• Assist shop supervisor in training of shop personnel.
• Maintain district vehicles in good operating conditions.
• Drives a school bus route as needed.
• Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED:
•Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand
tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and
lift equipment.
School bus and district vehicles. Use all tools and machinery as needed. Conduct bank inventory and
reconciliations.

• Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and
reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving
parts. Exposed to
dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
