    The City of Santa Barbara Library department manages Library services at Central Library, Eastside Library, and through outreach and mobile services, and also operates a location in Montecito on behalf of the County of Santa Barbara.

    The City of Santa Barbara Library Department seeks a creative and dynamic Senior Librarian to oversee the development and delivery of Library services to children ages 0-18 and their families and caregivers. This position oversees the delivery of reference and readers’ advisory services in the Children’s Library at Central Library as well as supports and programming for youth and families at all SBPL locations, including Central Library, Eastside Library, and Montecito Library. 
     
    This position collaborates with the entire supervisory team on the development and implementation of system-wide policies and procedures and special projects. Under limited supervision, plans, coordinates, and supervises the operations for the Santa Barbara Public Library System (SBPL). This position manages, supervises, trains, and evaluates a team of two librarians and four paraprofessional Library Technicians and hourly staff. Assigned professional library work could include oversight, planning, quality assurance, and operational efficiency for: family, youth and teen programming services, and community education, marketing and communication, collection management oversight, and partnership development.   Other professional responsibilities may include: participation in strategic planning; public presentations; grant funding development and management; development of specialized collection(s) materials and evaluation of collection/customer needs, interests, and requests; organizing and leading staff training; gathering and analyzing data and outcome assessments, and other work as required.Knowledge of:   Public Library services, organization, and equipment, program development, promotion, and implementation; methods and principles of supervision and leadership; methods of collection development; and general and specialized research techniques. Child development, early literacy practices, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) educational principles. 
    Skill In:   Leading professional, paraprofessional, and operational staff; establishing appropriate professional relationships; library program planning and promotion; organizing a work unit; collection development; technical reference work; using and maintaining library equipment and tools.  
    Ability to:   Effectively supervise staff, and lead a work unit to provide quality public service; coordinate public programming, events, and community education; assist in meeting the needs of library clientele; assess community needs for library services and encourage participation in new and established programs; develop, monitor and evaluate collection(s) for quality and program effectiveness; mentor others in performing complex librarian duties; communicate effectively in oral and written form; prepare and conduct presentations; write letters and statistical/narrative reports; supervise staff; explain rules, regulations, procedures and work effectively with a variety of library patrons; make library procedures and policy decisions in accordance with Director’s guidelines.     Establish and maintain productive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate in a timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; write accurately and concisely, using proper grammatical form. Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) are highly desirable.

    EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Desirable experience includes three (3) years of professional experience as a Librarian, including one (1)  year in a supervisory capacity. Experience in collection development and managing a collection and programming budget.  Equivalent to a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Library or Information Science or a related field.
     
    License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements: Class C driver’s license preferred.  
    The ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish is highly desirable, as is the ability to translate English to Spanish.
     
    Work Schedule:  Working hours are currently Tuesday and Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Schedules are dependent upon operational needs and are subject to change. It is important that your application and supplemental questionnaire show all the relevant education, training, and experience you possess which qualifies you for this position.
