Summary
The Albuquerque Academy Athletics Department is seeking an individual for the position of Girls Basketball Head Coach. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the Varsity Girls Basketball Program. Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Girl’s Basketball Head Coach assists with the development, organization, and implementation of a high-quality basketball program and follows the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) rules and regulations. The Girl’s Basketball Head Coach manages all practice and game preparation and logistics and is responsible for maintaining a high level of communication with fellow coaches, team members, parents, officials, and administration. This position does not guarantee the availability of a corresponding full-time teaching position. Strong candidates are attracted to our mission and see themselves as engaged community members.

Essential Functions
- Coordinate the development, promotion, and recruitment for the Varsity Girls Basketball Program.
- Represent Albuquerque Academy and the Varsity Girls Basketball Program in a professional manner.
- Hire and coordinate the work of assistant coaches and ensure that all coaches work together toward a common goal within the program.
- Hold meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the Girls Basketball Program.
- Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development.
- Assess players’ skills and assign team positions.
- Ensure all necessary physical exams, parental consent forms, waivers, and insurance forms are accurately completed and filed to fulfill all school and NMAA rules and regulations.
- Hold pre-season meetings with all student athletes and parents before the first official game.
- Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.
- Gather available information on competitors’ performance records, abilities, play styles, and game strategies. Develop appropriate game strategies based on the team’s capabilities.
- Attend all school-sponsored team events, ensuring proper behavior by coaches and team members.
- Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property.
- Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, including protecting students from hazing and bullying.
- Maintain and secure all basketball equipment and uniforms.
- Hold conferences with parents as necessary.
- Follow established protocol in the event of an athlete’s injury.
- Support the School and its mission, always maintaining a high degree of professionalism.
- Foster and maintain a culture of mutual respect, equitable practice, and joy.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and communicate and collaborate effectively across differences.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist student-athletes with college recruitment.
- Work with members of the school to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student-athletes.
- Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling games.
- Maintain records to ensure compliance with all NMAA regulations, including eligibility forms, transfer forms, and grade reports. Ensure that regulations are followed.
- Participate in activities such as banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
- Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
- Attend employee meetings as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Coursework in an Athletics-related field is preferred.
Experience
- Minimum one year of experience in coaching is required.
- Previous experience in head coaching is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of the game of basketball is required.
- Professional work ethic and unwavering commitment to the academic success and mission of the school.
- Problem-solving skills and the capability to act rationally and calmly in all situations.
- Knowledge of NMAA and high school basketball rules and regulations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, school administrators, parents, opponents, referees, and governing organizations.

Special Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- A New Mexico Coaching License is Required.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
Working Environment
- Majority of work is performed in an indoor setting on campus.
- Work hours are generally two-to-three hours after school, Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays. Some overnight travel is required for out-of-town games and tournaments.
- Weekend and evening work is required for games, tournaments, parent meetings, and team banquets programming.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds with or without assistance

- Extended periods of being outdoors in all weather conditions
- Frequent stooping, bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching
