Head Nurse plans and implements the overall nursing policies, procedures, and services for a unit. Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training clinical staff. Being a Head Nurse ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensure, certifications, and other annual training. May provide direct patient care and is responsible for assessing, planning, and evaluating patients. Additionally, Head Nurse requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Typically requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Summary:
    Under the direction of the Center Director and classroom Teacher, assist in the teaching and learning activities of the classroom with children aged 3 to 5 years. Assist the teacher in a Head Start setting providing a comprehensive program to meet educational, emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological needs of children.

    MINIMUM EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

    • 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education or Child Development courses from an accredited college or university; AND
    • 6 months of work experience in a licensed Early Childhood Education setting; AND
    • A Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) OR the ability to obtain a permit within 90 days of employment.

    Knowledge of:

    • Early childhood education, child development, and anti-bias education;
    • Local educational and community resources and their ability to be used in the classroom;
    • Second language acquisition; and
    • Head Start Policies and Procedures preferred.

    Ability to:

    • Follow directions given by the classroom Teacher;
    • To work well with young children;
    • Be proficient in oral and written communication in English language and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;
    • Write routine reports and correspondence;
    • Speak effectively with children, parents, and other staff;
    • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions;
    • Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations;
    • Communicate with people of various educational, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds;
    • Assist the teacher in planning and implementing activities with children between the ages of three and five years, consistent with the curriculum guide, resources and training provided;
    • Follow basic principles of early childhood development;
    • Establish and maintain effective, working relationships with children, parents, staff, and program specialists.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Assist the teacher in planning and maintaining a safe, clean, learning environment and in assuring the well-being and safety of the children in his/her care;
    • Maintain a cooperative attitude of working together with the teacher, volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing activities;
    • Assist teacher to implement the developmental assessment for each child to determine the child’s strengths and areas in which each child may need help;
    • Plan with and assist the teacher in preparing materials and supplies in advance for activities;
    • Assist the teacher in maintaining confidential assessment information, consisting of developmental assessments, individual goals, and observations of progress toward meeting goals;
    • Assist the teacher as needed in coordinating and implementing classroom activities including large and small groups.
    • Assist teacher in implementing behavior plans designed by resource/mentor teachers and/or mental health specialist;
    • Maintain discipline and supervision of children during all activities;
    • Supervise children at all times (both indoors and outdoors);
    • Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline;
    • Assist teacher in the full implementation of IEP’s and inclusion of children with disabilities and special needs;
    • Assist in developing activities based on Individual Education Plan (IEP) for children with special needs;
    • Provide input on weekly planning forms;
    • Accompany the teacher on home visits;
    • Assist with direct observations on children and record data;
    • Collect data and file in children’s portfolios and files;
    • Assist with kitchen duties and mealtime preparation;
    • Assist teacher to promote parent involvement; and
    • Assist in ensuring that children’s daily hygiene needs are met.


    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Good manual dexterity;
    • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods;
    • Must have excellent speaking and hearing ability;
    • Must be able to input data using a computer terminal keyboard;
    • Observe and hear sounds of the environment for health and safety;
    • Be able to walk, squat/kneel, crawl, sit on floor, balance, see, hear, and speak with children to ensure children’s health and safety; and
    • Move/lift up to 40 pounds while moving and holding children.
