Head Nurse plans and implements the overall nursing policies, procedures, and services for a unit. Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training clinical staff. Being a Head Nurse ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensure, certifications, and other annual training. May provide direct patient care and is responsible for assessing, planning, and evaluating patients. Additionally, Head Nurse requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Typically requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Madigan Army Medical Center is seeking a Head Nurse to join the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU allows nurses to help care for our Service Members' dependents and their families. The Madigan Army Medical Center NICU is a tight-knit, collaborative, interdisciplinary team focused on providing high quality care to critically ill children. The Department has low patient-staff ratios with many training and learning opportunities.


    The facility is one of four Level II Trauma Centers in Washington State and participates in unique partnerships with civilian facilities to provide care to non-beneficiary trauma victims beyond the gates of Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Our staff serves by caring for our military but are not subject to military requirements. We operate within safe staffing standards - giving you time to provide exceptional care.

    Responsibilities:

    DUTIES:

    • Serve as Head Nurse of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in a regional medical center.
    • Assist physicians with complex or potentially life-threatening procedures such as cardioversion and insertion of invasive lines (arterial, venous, and pulmonary artery catheters).
    • Coordinate patient and family needs with the case management team.
    • Plan work, make shift and individual work assignments, supervise and evaluate subordinate personnel.
    • Conduct formal and informal training introducing new equipment and/or procedures; review and expand clinical nursing knowledge, covering aspects of individual patient care in the orientation and development of subordinates.
    • Participate in policy and procedure development of the Department of Nursing, serve as a member of the Head Nurse Committee and In- Patient Services Quality Management Group, Quality Action Teams, and various other committees as delegated.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications:
    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Must be a United States Citizen.

    Must possess a valid Registered Nurse License that has not elapsed/expired.

    Must have an Associates, Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Nursing. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

    Professional Nursing Experience
    : Must have one or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes providing nursing care to neonatal intensive care unit patients; using specialized medical equipment such as cardiac monitors, oxygen saturation monitors, and/or respirators; and overseeing nursing staff.
