Head Nurse - Occupational Health directs nursing service activities for occupational health services. Develops and conducts training programs to promote employee safety in the workplace. Being a Head Nurse - Occupational Health conducts regular inspections of facilities and equipment to identify any health or safety hazards. Maintains records, investigates accidents and injuries, prepares appropriate reports for OSHA, and ensures compliance with all occupational health, safety, and environmental rules and regulations. Additionally, Head Nurse - Occupational Health coordinates the procurement, review, and project management of contracts and service agreements with outside vendors. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Occupational Health manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions.     Basic Function and Responsibilities:

    Occupational health nurses at Michigan Medicine Occupational Health Services (OHS) specialize in the care of Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan employees. Duties include telephone and walk in triage of work-related injury and illness, managing body substance exposure reporting, follow-up, and prevention education, and evaluation of communicable diseases exposure and follow-up. In addition, OHS occupational health nurses perform pre-placement exams for new health system employees and volunteers, ensuring system health standards are met as a condition of employment.


    Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

    Essential

    • Answer and triage health system employee Injury and illness calls; provide education on policy guidelines for return to work.
    • Assessment and triage of employees who present in person to OHS MedInn clinic.
    • Perform pre-placement assessments, including immunization record review, venipuncture, immunization administration, and Ishihara testing.
    • Provide clinical support for Medical Surveillance visits.
    • Utilizes defined systems to document clinical findings and order management.
    • Complies with all University of Michigan, Michigan Medicine and departmental policies, procedures, standards, and expectations.
    • Demonstrates outstanding customer service skills and phone etiquette.
    • Collaborates with other members of the team to achieve the ideal patient care experience.
    • Supports the department?s commitment to continuous improvement activities and principles through positive and respectful contribution in all problem-solving and change processes.

    Other Related Duties:

    • Practices within the scope of license, certification, or registration.
    • Complies with all applicable continuing education requirements.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Presence at multiple office locations as assigned by leadership and/or to meet the needs of the clinic.
    • May require occasional evening or weekend hours.

    Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
    This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
    Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
    Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

    Required Qualifications*

    • Current Michigan Registered Nurse license.
    • Minimum of two (2) years (within the past three (3) years) RN experience, providing direct care to adult patients in an ambulatory care clinic or inpatient setting.
    • Proficiency performing venipuncture (experience must be within the last year).
    • Recent (within 1 year) administering vaccines in the adult population.


    Physical Requirements:

    The employee will be able to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations: ability to work in a sedentary position for long periods of time, long periods of standing, ability to communicate/ exchange information, fine motor coordination/dexterity necessary for keyboarding or typing, and may require reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, moving about, lifting of up to 10 pounds, etc., with or without the use of assistive/adaptive devices. The employee may or may not be assigned to multiple different work locations as determined by patient care needs and leadership.

    Work Schedule



    Shift/ Hours: Monday through Friday, day shift with some weekends, evenings, and/or holidays may be required, 40 hours per week
