Head Nurse - Occupational Health directs nursing service activities for occupational health services. Develops and conducts training programs to promote employee safety in the workplace. Being a Head Nurse - Occupational Health conducts regular inspections of facilities and equipment to identify any health or safety hazards. Maintains records, investigates accidents and injuries, prepares appropriate reports for OSHA, and ensures compliance with all occupational health, safety, and environmental rules and regulations. Additionally, Head Nurse - Occupational Health coordinates the procurement, review, and project management of contracts and service agreements with outside vendors. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Occupational Health manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Occupational Health typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position Description:

    This position will be part of a technical team responsible for engineering work that includes continuous improvement, investigating and troubleshooting equipment/manufacturing/facility problems, analyzing production results, implementing and improving manufacturing methods and processes, and ensuring high yield and productivity in a highly automated manufacturing environment. His/her functions will also include interaction with internal and external customers and external vendors to solve urgent and complex problems by identifying and evaluating alternatives to provide support of all in-plant production as required. Position requires some on-call support.

     

    Job Summary

    The Lead Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for direct management of nursing staff and delivery of clinical operations.   They guide and support medical staff, promote communications, monitor medical programs, integrate with the local business, manage the site emergency response program, and promote health and well-being.

    Expanded Responsibilities

    1. Supervision of Day-to-Day Health Center Operations
      1. Order Supplies to maintain adequate inventory
      2. Verify and/or pay bills
      3. Update BPD monthly and implement sufficiency plan to address outages
      4. Manage Staffing (scheduling, TKS, Beeline, Call-offs, EOH Charts, etc.)
        1. Schedule nursing Staff to assure adequate coverage on each shift
        2. Maintain an adequate staffing pool (Per Diems and SOCs)
        3. Provide input to contract agency on performance issues for contract staff
      5. At sites with a contract physician, provide overall Health Center Operation oversight responsibility (management, programs, contract physician, and medical staff)
      6. Provide direct patient care where allowed
      7. Facilitate resolution with staff including 1st step grievance at represented sites
      8. Manage personnel and complex staff issues – GM and Contract
      9. Support DIP Meetings
      10. Manage complex WC / Disability Cases
    2. Manage and Develop Direct Reports
      1. Complete CAP process for direct reports
      2. Coach and mentor staff nurses and ancillary staff
      3. Encourage all staff to actively pursue an IDP annually
      4. Serve as Hiring Manager for staff nurses
      5. Develop Succession Planning for Direct Reports
      6. Conduct or Assign New Hire Orientation and Training
      7. Ensure Licensure Training Workbook Compliance
    3. Promote Communication
      1. Schedule monthly staff meetings
      2. Meet with Plant Medical Director or Contract Physician regularly to review and discuss operational concerns and issues (patient care, staffing, business partner issues)
      3. Facilitate Medical Staff Communication – verbal and/or written (staff meetings, written directives, memos, one on one communication
    4. Integrate with Business Partners
      1. Provide Nursing expertise to site Management, HR, Labor, Safety, IH, ERGO, etc.
      2. Attend meetings – PSRB, Ergo, Hearing, HMCC, DIP, etc.
    5. Maintain Health Center Compliance
      1. Complete Health Center self-assessment (ORM)
      2. Review Policies and Procedures and implement changes
      3. Audit medical records for quality
      4. Monitor OSHA Log for accuracy
      5. Maintain ILM Compliance
      6. Monitor Ergo Case Summary Report for accuracy
      7. Ensure all medical equipment meets certification and calibration requirements (thermometer, glucometer, audiometer, spirometer, etc.)
      8. Site Licensures are current (CLIA Waiver, X-Ray, Waste Generator Certificates, etc.)
    6. Monitor Physical Exam program
      1. Work with business partners to receive a list of employees that require qualification and / or surveillance exams
      2. Work with business partners to receive notification when employees move in or out of department
      3. Ensure exams are scheduled and completed including the escalation process
    7. Support Medical Emergency Response Activities
      1. MERP - complete template annually
      2. Track response times and create a corrective action plan as appropriate
      3. Coordinate with Plant Physician - plan, conduct and participate and or observe mock runs followed by a review and debrief with the team
      4. Ensure training requirements are met (First Aid, CPR, AED, etc.)
    8. Support Wellness/Wellbeing initiatives at the site
      1. Joint Wellness Committee and LifeSteps

    Requirements

    • Five or more years of nursing experience required, supervisory experience preferred
    • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment
    • Ability to communicate, motivate, and inspire direct reports and others
    • Ability to lead change within work groups and departments
    • Demonstrates innovative and strategic thinking
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills

    Education and Training

    • Nursing Bachelor’s degree required
    • Valid nursing license required in the State(s) of practice
    • Certification as Occupational Health Nursing (COHN) or Occupational Health Nursing Specialist (COHN-S) preferred
