Head Nurse - Occupational Health directs nursing service activities for occupational health services. Develops and conducts training programs to promote employee safety in the workplace. Being a Head Nurse - Occupational Health conducts regular inspections of facilities and equipment to identify any health or safety hazards. Maintains records, investigates accidents and injuries, prepares appropriate reports for OSHA, and ensures compliance with all occupational health, safety, and environmental rules and regulations. Additionally, Head Nurse - Occupational Health coordinates the procurement, review, and project management of contracts and service agreements with outside vendors. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Occupational Health manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions.     Position Summary

    The OH Nurse delivers quality care utilizing advanced clinical skills and knowledge with at a minimum of 2 years experience in Occupational Health Nursing. This should include current licensure by the state of North Carolina.

    Responsibilities

    Conducts comprehensive pre-employment screening on new hires:

    Reviews medical history and evaluates the need for further evaluation with OH physician.

    Performs vision screening on all new hires and evaluates need for further testing.

    Performs drug screening on all new hires and appropriately sends specimen to outside lab if required. Obtains I-cup point of care testing and follows OH protocol for positive screens.

    Reviews immunization history and determines which immunizations are required for employment and administers needed vaccines.

    Draws titers if required due to no immunization/titer history.

    Evaluates past TB exposures history and plants PPD/orders CXR if indicated.

    Evaluates respiratory medical surveillance questionnaire.

    Provides fit testing evaluation/education for required new hires.

    Performs PCP evaluation on required new hires.

    Documents correctly in OHM.
    Conducts initial health screenings on new Volunteers.

    Evaluates immunization/allergy/mediation history.

    Provides immunizations that are required per our organization.

    Draws titers if required due to no immunization/titer history.

    Documents correctly in OHM. Sends proper clearance to Volunteer Dept.
    Conducts comprehensive annual screenings for all Employees and Volunteers.

    Reviews latex, respiratory surveillance, immunizations, and regulatory requirements with employees.

    Administers PPD skin test/performs surveillance for TB history.

    Draws titers if required.

    Performs voluntary MRSA nasal swab (employees)

    Performs voluntary wellness screening which includes glucose, BP, weight, and cholesterol monitoring (employees).

    Documents correctly in OHM.
    Evaluates employees for return to duty following a medical absence.

    Obtains appropriate medial documentation.

    Documents correctly in OHM.

    Takes vital signs and able to interpret "out of range" readings.

    Evaluate employee for physical ability to return to work.

    Communicate with employee's manager regarding any work restrictions.

    Works alongside OH Physician for evaluation of some patients who need evaluation for "fit for duty".
    Evaluates work related injuries.

    Evaluates reason/cause for injury. Provides education on safety measures to take in the future. Provides first aid treatment including medicating and writing restrictions, if necessary, according to protocol.

    Communicates with Employee's Manager regarding work restrictions.

    Schedules to see OH Physician if necessary.

    Investigates air quality concerns and communicates with Safety Dept and Managers of affected Departments.
    Exposure to Communicable Diseases

    Evaluates exposures to communicable disease.

    Provides PPD or prophylaxis medication if indicated.

    Provides surveillance for follow up to exposures.
    Provide Care for Follow up Blood Exposures.

    Evaluates employee for cause /reason of blood exposure.

    Evaluate source patient for HIV/Hep B, and Hep C.

    Provide employee with PEP if indicated per order of ID physician.

    Trained in use of Health Span computer system.

    Communicate with Infectious Disease Physician with PEP orders and questions.

    Enter data into Manager's BE Report, Ramsey Report, as well as OHM and "blood exposure log".

    Provide follow-up care for employee who is taking PEP or on monitoring system.
    Worker's Comp.

    Provide back up for Workers Comp Nurse during absences, vacation, or as an extra Nurse.

    Assist The OH physician during exams with injured employees.

    Schedule appropriate appointments such as PT, Chiro, MD referrals, etc.

    Schedule follow-up appointments with OH Physician.

    Communicate with Dept Manager regarding work restrictions or return to duty.
    Drug Screens

    Obtains urine/blood samples for testing due to for cause, post accident, or random for SATA program.

    Obtains consent and provides guidance to employee, managers, and EAP.

    Communicates with MRO regarding positive screens.

    Communicates results with dept managers, EAP, and Risk Management.
    Provides services to Outsider Contracted Employees.

    Administers PPD skin tests if indicated.

    Draws titers if necessary

    Administers immunizations per protocol.

    BP monitoring and provides fit testing with applicable.

    Administers urine or saliva testing for drugs alcohol.

    Initial follow-up care for blood exposures and initiates PEP if indicated.
    Latex screening

    Provides surveillance for allergy to latex. This is one annually and pre-placement.

    Draws titer for RAST Testing, if indicated.

    Follow-up with employees who have the RAST testing.

    Restrictions written as appropriate.
    Miscellaneous Duties

    Performs weekly educational session with new hires regarding services offered by Occupational Health.

    Monitors BP for employees

    Provides first aid including OTC mediations if requested.

    Refer employee to Disease Management, EAP, or personal MD as appropriate.

    Keeps individually assigned projects updated.

    Maintains adequate supplies in each clinic room.

    Clerical functions such answering phones, transferring data entry into computer data base, files information into employee charts appropriately, make copies, scan information with Xerox machine, and other duties as assigned.

    Keeps supply closets neat and orderly.

    Minimum Requirements

    American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
    Associates RN Degree or higher.

    NC RN License is required.

    Maintains RN licensure by obtaining 15 hours of continuing education annually.

    Maintains current CPR certification.

    Maintains knowledge of regulations from OSHA, CDC, NIOSH, and Infection Control Guidelines.

    Maintains PCP competency.

    Encouraged to self study and achieve COHN certification.

    1 to 3 years experience in Med-Surgery Nursing, Occupational Health, Public Health or Infection Control.
