POSITION SUMMARY

This position cares for patients before, during, and after surgery. This nurse works alongside surgical teams to make sure that patients are receiving the best possible care and serve as liaisons between the surgical team and the patients’ families. They will also help patients with recovery following surgery and teach them and their families about at home post-operative care.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Prepares the operating room as directed by the physician and supervises the preparation of the operating room for each procedure.
2. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
3. Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
4. Acts as a link between the sterile members or the operation room and other departments.
5. Maintains the supplies of the surgical team as they are needed or requested.
6. Observes aseptic technique and reports any breaks in technique.
7. Documentation meets current standards and policies and is completed within the shift.
8. Maintains accurate records of all surgical procedures.
9. May circulate and scrub for various procedures
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 

• Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing with a current license to practice nursing in the State of Nebraska.

Experience:

• Clinical background in nursing practice required
• Clinical background in surgical nursing preferred

Licensure and Certification:

• Current RN (Registered Nurses) License from the State of Nebraska
• BLS required (within 90 days of hire)
• ACLS, and PALS required (within 1 year of hire)
• CNOR preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of:

• General nursing theories and practices.
• Universal precautions and an understanding of basic aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Facts, disease/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment.
• All areas of care specific to surgery.
• Medications and IV fluids and their correct administration.

• Skills in:

• Independent judgement
• Basic nursing techniques
• Prioritization and Organization

• Ability to:

• Work with people.
• Learn and build on foundation of nursing education.
• Be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
• Assists physicians with procedures in the surgical department.
