Summary of position:
Coordinate the efficient implementation of the Health and Nutrition service areas of the Head Start program.
Job Responsibilities (see attached job description for additional details):
- Establish a workable and effective medical, dental and nutrition program in accordance with health guidelines for Head Start programs.
- Keep complete medical and dental records on each child which include past history, immunizations, and current information of medical significance
- Plan and deliver health programs for staff and parents in growth and development, safety and accident prevention, family relationships and other appropriate subjects.
- Hold individual conferences with parents and staff about health and nutrition related concerns whenever needed.
- Make home visits and follow-up visits to seek and disperse information on the health status of the child and on the overall program.
- Assist parents in securing a medical and dental home and correction and/or treatment of medical and dental defects.
- Collect and record relevant data in various data systems.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines necessary to ensure children’s health needs are supported appropriately.
- Perform or supervise hearing and vision screening, growth assessments, or any indicated special testing.
- Instruct the Family Engagement Workers on the proper methods and procedures of securing and maintaining appropriate health/medical records.
- Orient and train Family Engagement Workers to assist with the overall medical, dental and nutrition program.
- Transfer medical and dental records from Head Start Program to the regular schoolprograms.
- Responsible for keeping a monthly statistical report of service area activities.
- Monitor Nutrition Program for compliance with both Head Start and U.S.D.A. guidelines.
- Assist with the development of the Health Advisory Committee and attend meetings as resource person.
- Attend Education Advisory Committee as a resource person.
- Attend all staff meetings and related in-service training sessions.
- Ability to interpret program to individuals, private and public groups and to community organizations.
- Procure or purchase necessary medical, dental and nutrition supplies for centers according to program-approved guidelines and with the consent of the program administrator. This includes first aid kits for center and buses.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Comply with Health and Nutrition Performance Standards.
- Develop and implement the Health and Nutrition Service Plans and assist with development of training plans for staff and parents.
- Work with the Disabilities/Transition Specialist to insure referrals to appropriate services for children with health disabilities.
- Participate in Career Development when feasible.
- Perform any other related duties relative to Head Start as assigned by the Supervisor,
- Health and Nutrition Services, Assistant Program Administrator/Family Services or
- Program Administrator/Head Start.
Qualifications:
- Current license to practice as a registered professional nurse as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the practice of public health nursing and school nursing.
- Knowledge of the growth and development processes of the young child.
- Knowledge of services performed by other Health and Welfare agencies in the community.
- Ability to communicate effectively with administration, families, children and all concerned in the program.
- Proficiency in computer application skills with the ability to enter data, generate reports, and analyze results.
- Provide own transportation.
- Ability to work with and relate to young children and families of diverse backgrounds.
- Original certificates of clearance from the State Police, the Child Abuse Registry and PDE FBI.
- The holder of this position could be required as part of his or her duties to engage in activities that can be charged to a Medical Assistance (MA) or other state or federal healthcare program. Clearance as a provider by both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the federal government is therefore an essential qualification for this position.
Schedule: Full-time, 35 hours/week, 12 month/year
Salary for the 2023-2024 School Year:
$20.61-27.18/hour. Per Head Start Salary Scale as established by the Berks County Intermediate Unit Board of Directors and the Head Start Policy Council
