Head of Anesthesiology is responsible for the efficient operation of anesthesia services. Develops, implements, and maintains anesthesia procedures and practices. Being a Head of Anesthesiology works closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure the highest standards of quality and service are maintained. Manages a staff of anesthesia technicians and nurses. Additionally, Head of Anesthesiology requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a top management. The Head of Anesthesiology manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Head of Anesthesiology typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.   • Position Summary:
    Under the leadership of the supervising or medically directing physician, the CRNA is an active member of the Anesthesia team that delivers professional services and support that is consistent with the strategic vision, goals, philosophy and direction of anesthesia department and CRHS. The CRNA is responsible for providing anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures and administers anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures. The CRNA provides continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoring the patient’s physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care of the patient.
     
    Basic Qualifications:
    ·         Education:
    Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia education program is required.
    ·         Experience:
    Requires up to one year of work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
    ·         Licensure, Registrations & Certifications:
    Requires a current state license as a Registered Nurse and is listed in good standing with the state’s Department of Professional Credentialing.
    Requires a current certification in BLS. (If BLS verification is not current upon hire, it must be obtained within the orientation period and ACLS, and PALS within one year.
     
    Essential Job Responsibilities:
    • Maintains excellence in airway management and shall be familiar in the usage of all airway adjuncts. i.e., bullard, fiberoptic scope, ILMA, etc.
    • Works within scope of delineated clinical privileges.
    • Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection of patients, and other health care professionals.
    • Maintains the appropriate confidentiality of patient information at all times.
    • Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
    • Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as, but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertion of invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol; endotracheal intubation and extubation; performing arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
    • Monitors the patient’s physical response to the anesthetic and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition. Manages the anesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
    • Recognizes abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or form of therapy. Initiates corrective measures. Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provides resuscitative care as necessary. Evaluates and manages the patient in the immediate post-operative period.
    • Administers IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical history and surgical procedure. Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and then consultation with the anesthesiologist.
    • Appropriately documents the patient status in the anesthesia record.
    • Performs all required safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verifies the appropriate supplies before initiating care. Procures and assembles equipment and supplies as indicated if anesthesia tech is not available.
    • Reviews appropriate documentation for informed consent and identifies appropriate surgical site during SBAR with circulating RN and holding room RN. Participates in surgical pause in the OR with entire surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards.
    • Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in the peri-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
    • Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students in the clinical area.
    • Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and State and federal guidelines.
    • Presents a professional image to CRHS’s nursing co-workers, clinical and medical staff, patients, families and visitors.
    • Attends professional development programs and in-service training and meets the minimum requirement for continuing professional education.

    • Attends professional development programs and in-service training and meets the minimum requirement for continuing professional education.
    • Performs all assigned patient care duties in a timely and accurate manner as measured by logs, charts and observation.
    • Complies with all safety and infection control policies and practices in the delivery of direct patient care as measured by feedback and observation from nursing, medical and management staff.
    • Demonstrates reliability as measured by compliance with the CRHS Time and Attendance policy.
    • Demonstrates professional conduct and adherence to all safety, confidentiality, and HIPAA standards.
    • Promotes teamwork with the entire staff, as well as other contacts within the department, as measured by observations of manager and co-workers.
    • Adheres to the CRHS Standards of Behavior as measured by observations of staff, as well as outside and other inside customers.
    • Verbalizes all core competencies of the unit and department.
    • Complies with all regulatory requirements including the National Patient Safety Goals as observed by peers, supervisor and all members of the healthcare team.
    • Actively participates as a member of the healthcare team by attending all mandated in-services and a and staff meetings as determined by the department director.
