Conducts needs assessments and keeps up-to-date on changes in health care technology to keep program material current. Being a Health Educator develops, coordinates, and disseminates educational resources and materials. May provide health education outreach and consultation. Additionally, Health Educator requires a bachelor's degree in a related area. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Reports to: WSU SNAP-Ed Coordinator Supervisor
Required Qualifications:
· High school graduate
· Experience with and/or passion for working with any of the following populations: elementary and/or high school school-aged youth
· Knowledge of edible food gardening
· Ability to work independently with little supervision in a collaborative work environment
· Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within county
· While using a private vehicle for official business, must have current automobile liability insurance
· Able to lift 30lbs
· Ability to work in an outdoor environment year-round
· Employment is contingent upon passing an annual background screening
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bilingual Spanish/English
· Experience teaching youth
· Experience working with diverse audiences
· Demonstrated ability to organize and use time effectively
· A can-do attitude and the ability to learn quickly
Experience with event coordination
Position Description
WSU Extension’s SNAP-Ed program is looking for a passionate, dedicated, community-oriented hourly employee to help us fulfill our mission to enable low-income populations to make healthy nutrition and physical activity choices.
The most important qualities we are looking for are passion for and experience with edible food gardening. Having initiative and being able to work both independently and collaboratively are also very important for this position.
The position will focus on:
· Designing, coordinating, and delivering program activities at events such as school gardens and farmers markets.
· Assisting with school edible food gardens by providing a garden focus year-round; assisting with and/or coordinating the building or planting of existing edible food gardens on site at schools; teaching classes related to edible food gardening; and encouraging ongoing on-site sustainability of these gardens.
Curriculum and training provided. Coordinator will facilitate relationships with schools and other partners.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a federally funded program authorized through the Farm Bill and administered by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.
SNAP-Ed supports obesity prevention and nutrition education through policy, systems and environmental approaches and direct education where community members with limited-incomes eat, learn, live, play and shop.
