Health Informatics Director directs an organization's clinical biostatistics or health informatics department. Oversees the analysis, management and performance of health information data to aid patient care. Being a Health Informatics Director monitors latest software and technology to keep processes up-to-date and efficient. Communicates with other departments and team members to identify new sources of data, ensure data is used effectively, and establish new initiatives. Additionally, Health Informatics Director requires a master's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Health Informatics Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Health Informatics Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. Biomedical Informatics Specialist II

  • Position Purpose
    This role will develop and support biomedical informatics and data science services and initiatives at Research Computing. Collaborating with PIs, researchers and students throughout the entire research project life-cycle, from grant-writing, to research data planning, execution, publication and dissemination. Offering outreach, training, and knowledge sharing, to further the computational expertise of the research community across the Dartmouth campus.

    Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
    • Degree in data science, computer science, or a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field, followed by 5 years of progressive professional experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Proficiency in common data science tools and techniques, such as Python and R, and statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS, Stata
    • Proficiency in data management, manipulation, clean-up and storage techniques
    • Strong statistical and analytical skills
    • Experience providing high performance/throughput computing end-user services consulting support for Linux HPC clusters
    • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
    • Ability to network and collaborate with key contacts outside their own area of expertise.
    • Strong communication with PIs, researchers, technical and administrative personnel, and students

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD.) in relevant field
    • Significant experience performing academic research, incl. grant writing, budgeting, IRB
    • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques
    • Familiarity with advanced data science, visualization and dashboarding tools (eg. Tableau) and techniques
    • Designing, developing, porting, tuning, profiling, debugging and optimizing parallel and serial High Performance/Throughput Computing applications on Linux environments
    • Ability to direct experience with and doing computation for one or more scientific research domains (e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Computational biology.)
    • Experience teaching training workshops in academic or technology fields to researchers and community members

    • Designs, implements, tests, and maintains robust and scalable data analysis pipelines and software systems. Supports research projects in collaboration with researchers and campus partners.
    • Identifies opportunities for innovation and process improvement in research projects and collaborates/leads those initiatives
    • Represents Biomedical Informatics, Data Science and statistics subject matter expertise in working with leadership, researcher and peers.
    • Serves as a Liaison between ITC, Research Computing and the Dartmouth Research community.
    • Implements and automates data flows to manage external and internal data.
    • Provide data science consultation services in data management, cleaning, analysis, visualization.
    • Works with the Information Security (InfoSec) group to maintain highest data storage and transfer security standards (PHI, PII, HIPAA, FERPA)
    • Continuously engages in professional development to build leadership and technology expertise.

    Description
    Research Strategy
    • Identifies and manages solutions and resources needed to align team delivery of services on the Research Computing roadmap, including strategic planning for open source and commercial software in partnership with principal investigators (PI), researchers and peers.
    • Supports PIs, Research Computing and ITC, with grant writing by providing data plan, technical implementation, and budgeting documents. Identifies opportunities for partial cost recovery in project support.
    • Aligns Biomedical Informatics initiatives, with ITC goals in support of the Dartmouth mission.
    • Represents Dartmouth College at international conferences in fields related to biomedical informatics.
    • Reinforces and promotes the space and structure of the team’s culture and values in alignment with ITC.

    Outreach and Consulting
    • Consults with clients to design and deliver solutions aligned to client needs.
    • Provides technical assistance and support related to high-performance computing environments, software, and hardware, offers solutions, and helps prioritize support tickets.
    • Assist developing the research community’s technical skills by providing comprehensive training for biomedical informatics and data science tools and techniques in collaboration with the Library and other campus partners.
    • Offers open-access consultation time (office hours) to promote research computing services across campus.
    • Provides biomedical informatics support to ensure data quality and usability.
    • Builds relationships with clients to understand and represent their research and teaching needs.
    • Works with leadership to promote cross-team communication, collaboration, processes, and services.
    • Mentors peers by sharing knowledge, offering advice and providing assistance as needed.
