    UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for aInformatics Specialist!

    In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (ITS) and under the general guidance of the Clinical Informatics Manager, the primary focus of the Informatics Specialist (Informatics Specialist) position is to support multidisciplinary health care teams in the specification and implementation of clinical information systems to support the UW Medicine continuum of care. In addition to providing informatics expertise and innovation, the Informatics Specialist coordinates the project tasks for successful outcomes, serving as a liaison between the application team, the project manager, and sponsors.

    Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
    • Communicating with customers, performing a detailed requirements analysis.
    • Analyzing work process flows and technical solutions to bridge the gap between current and future state.
    • Systems and process design and development.
    • Participating in training and staff development.
    • Supporting system standardization and optimization.
    • Supporting workflow analysis and redesign and conducting gap analysis to identify opportunities to improve system and user efficiency.
    • Providing knowledge of new enhancements and functionality to end users.
    • Acting as a liaison between the clinical teams and ITS.
    • Contributing to project strategy, solution implementation, and coordinating with key stakeholders.
    • Documenting requirements for sign-off, communication, and test script development.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Systems/Process Design and Development (30%)
    • Define the architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specific requirements. Use established design methods and templates to document, build, test, and validate the design.
    • Assist in developing product specifications including the application and functionality of software programs and software vendor requests for proposals.
    • Participate in groups for clinical systems development.
    • Facilitate root cause analysis of systems issues and failures.
    • Participate in process redesign, including as is, to be, gap analysis, action plans, and implementation.

    Clinical Informatics Expertise, Leadership and Innovation (30%)
    • Routinely conduct intentional clinical rounding to gain overall knowledge of facility specific workflow, patient throughput and challenges with technology solutions.
    • Understand the value of continuous quality improvement data; use quality measures to improve performance and accountability for patient outcomes, patient experiences, and safe delivery of care.
    • Promote the use of data analytics to identify clinical patterns and devise strategies to improve patient outcomes.
    • Demonstrate willingness to evolve role in conjunction with system transformation.
    • Synthesize, integrate, and apply clinical informatics body of knowledge and expertise, new trends, and research into practice.

    Customer Success and Engagement (30%)
    • Observe and assess user skills, coaches individuals, and provides opportunities to enhance user proficiency.
    • Analyze and prioritize clinician feedback, escalate use issues, and recommends enhancements.
    • Contribute as a team member for clinical systems projects and service lines.
    • Aid and support in transitioning a clinical project from implementation to maintenance.
    • Serve as an internal consultant to clinical staff and departments for the purpose of broad integrative program development with other programs/services of the organization.

    Program Management and Support (5%)
    • Represent the enterprise in defining program and project structure (e.g., governance, sponsorship, and program level decision-making process).
    • Work with assigned project managers to coordinate/direct activities, set priorities, and resolve issues across projects from the project initiation phase through its transition to production support.
    • Oversee issues and risks related to cross-project dependencies.
    • Manage key stakeholder expectations of the program or project.
    • Ensure the quality and timely delivery of information services to the organization.

    Other (5%)
    • Analyze system changes or outages, communicate, and prepare for clinician impact if needed.
    • Validate that downtime forms and reports meet clinician requirements.
    • Assist as requested in preparing for executive project meetings, including sponsor and Steering Committees.
    • Provide statuses, updates, reports, and options documents as requested at all levels of the organization.
    • Serve as an administrator on call for large planned and unplanned outages.


    REQUIREMENTS

    Bachelor's degree in applicable clinical area of practice OR Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration.

    Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required if assigned to nursing informatics system.

    3 years of clinical experience in an inpatient and/or ambulatory health care setting, using electronic heath record systems, to include:
    • Quality Assurance experience through SDLC or project.
    • Customer and clinical staff consulting experience.
    • Experience eliciting customer requirements to respond to customer needs.
    • Demonstrated strong business acumen, showing understanding of customers, applications, and project team skill level.
    • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and ambiguity.
    • Demonstrated adult education/training skills with a variety of audiences and computer skill levels.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation, documentation, and analytical writing skills.
    • Demonstrated understanding of hospital, ambulatory, and post-acute care operations, interdepartmental processes, and interdisciplinary interactions and workflows in the healthcare setting.
    • Strong project management, change management, and team building skills.

    DESIRED

    • Master’s degree in Nursing, Clinical Informatics, Business, or related field.
    • Washington State licensure in applicable clinical area of practice.
    • Informatics Board Certification.
    • Participation in Informatics professional associations such as ANIA, HIMSS, CHIMSS, AMIA, etc.
    • Epic application certification.
    • Experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
    • Supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.
    • Healthcare IT experience as a clinical informaticist.
    • Experience with process improvement and/or information systems within a clinical setting.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.
  • The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The work may be performed in either an office environment or by telecommuting with manager approval, during normal business hours; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed.
  • Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority.
  • Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.
  • ITS provides services to all UW Medicine organizations – HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, VMC, UWNC, UWP, SOM, and ALNW. The individual in this position must learn many organizational structures and cultures and continually foster collaboration.
