The Clinical Informatics Manager is responsible for overseeing the day to day duties of the Clinical Informatics (CI) team, as well as the development of skills including the process of development and evaluation that enhances the performance or professional development of the team members. The planning and implementation of clinical applications/technology including coordination of tasks, development of training programs/policies related to the continued use of these applications and evaluation of the success/effectiveness of the applications. The Clinical Informatics Manager will, in collaboration with operational leaders, patient care teams (Quality, Medication Safety, PI, etc.), as well as IT and other Informatics teams to develop, implement, and coordinate standardization of information system policies and procedures to promote the safe, efficient, and optimal use of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The Clinical Informatics Manager must be able to multi-task, perform all duties independently with strong prioritization skills and be self-directed in utilizing resources to meet objectives, as well as serve as a resource to other team members and operational staff. Maintains a high level of standardization and consistency and will provide adequate opportunities for team member growth and skill development.
Leadership Oversight: The Clinical Informatics Manager will assist the CCIO in overseeing the day-to-day duties of the Clinical Informatics team. Facilitates team activities/projects related to information systems, research, design, implementation, maintenance, and issue resolution to ensure they are meeting the operational strategic goals and objectives. Develops and maintains strong working relationships and serves as a point of escalation for operational leadership. Provides leadership guidance and direction for information system programs, projects, and services, incorporating broad knowledge of all clinical impacts. Demonstrates knowledge of fiscal responsibility by maintaining an efficient work environment and maintaining knowledge and managing the departmental budget. Maintains a high level of standardization and consistency and will provide adequate opportunities for team member growth and skill development. Evaluates staff performance, ensures policies and procedures are followed (dress code, absenteeism, compliance, confidentiality, etc.) and will provide counseling when necessary. Anticipates new technologies and prepares the CI team to meet new challenges.
Systems Optimization/Maintenance: The Clinical Informatics Manager will develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive integration testing strategy, as well as a communication plan to ensure changes are effectively and safely introduced into the environment. Ensures clinical applications are working as designed and that future implementations and upgrades are designed respective to clinical best practice and end user optimization needs. Collaborates with operational leaders, IT and other Informatics’ departments to coordinate planned and unplanned downtimes. Will communicate with providers and clinical staff and serves as a resource during downtime of critical systems.
Workflow and Process Improvement: Develops and maintains collaborative working relationship with operational leaders and staff, as well as IT and other Informatics teams to support and enhance the development, interpretation, and adoption of new and or changes in policies, procedures, and patient care workflow documentation. Maintains a visual presence by routinely rounding to enhance communication and serving as a resource/contact for CI team, providers, nurses and other clinical staff to assist and facilitate workflow and process improvement initiatives. Effectively receives, investigates and resolves issues reported by staff, providers and operational leadership related to software, workflows and/or processes. Will work to determine root cause(s) of problems/failures in collaboration with operational leadership, IT and other Informatics teams, while following the organizational and operational change management processes.
Training and Education: Develops and oversees the training related strategies and educational efforts of clinical applications to new medical staff physicians, resident physicians, locum physicians, mid-level providers, and medical students. Develops a Super User strategy. Identifies educational needs of end-users and communicates those needs to the appropriate stakeholders. Routinely conducts gap analysis for training programs and modifies programs to support the ever-evolving environment. Ensures CI team is providing standardized and effective education materials, at the elbow support, and training of EHR functionality and clinical workflows to support clinical educational needs and adoption.
Committee Support: Leads or participates in interdisciplinary committee(s), with a focus on IT solutions for improving clinical processes such as Physician Expanse Team, OMT, etc., and communicates all follow-ups with identified stakeholders. The Clinical Informatics Manager will develop, implement and lead the Operational Change Management Committee. Assists with process improvement activities and IT related patient safety opportunities to include operational requests for IT changes, RCA/FMEA for clinical related IT issues and TJC (The Joint Commission) readiness assistance.
