Health Information Services Director directs and oversees all policies and procedures related to healthcare information management. Responsible for ensuring accuracy and efficiency in the medical records and transcription departments. Being a Health Information Services Director reviews processes and identifies areas for improvement taking into account user needs. May act as liaison between information services and technology department, ensuring that systems are accessible and in accordance with the needs of the organization. Additionally, Health Information Services Director ensures that all record keeping and information disbursement complies with HIPAA regulations. Requires a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, a related field, or equivalent. Typically reports to senior management. The Health Information Services Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     Job Summary

    Under the direction of UCSF HIMS Leadership and in partnership with the Clinical Documentation Integrity program and related Apex Programs, the Manager Health Information Management Services is accountable for driving the implementation of the organizational best practices at UCSF HIMS Health to achieve optimum overall performance.

    This position is accountable for driving strategic and value programs within UCSF Health HIMS to support a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and high-value patient care. This position is responsible for overseeing projects and process improvement initiatives at each HIMS location.

    Ensures operations are in place for retention and security of patient care information. Interfaces with departments across UCSF and BCHO, including clinical, research, legal, and reimbursement.

    Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

    Required Qualifications

    • Completion of a formal Health Information Management education program recognized by the American Health Information Management Association is preferred.
    • RHIT/RHIA Licensing
    • 3 years related HIMS experience in a healthcare setting
    • LEAN management systems or willingness to learn Lean.
    • EPIC experience
    • 5 years of applicable administrative and/or management experience in a healthcare setting
    • Advanced knowledge and applied background in health information management systems and technologies. Knowledge of transcription, abstraction, and coding concepts. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge in an acute care setting to improve health information management operations.
    • Solid skills in electronic information technology applications and environments. Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Comprehensive knowledge of the organization's health information application programs to teach others.
    • Demonstrated business acumen and negotiating skills in a highly complex, fast-paced, matrix environment
    • Demonstrated ability to bring about large-scale change through influenced-based leadership
    • Demonstrated skill in forming projects and efforts that deliver measurable results
    • Knowledge of health information processing and ability to apply concepts to operations. Thorough knowledge of the healthcare environment (preferably academic medical center) to understand department and stakeholder priorities, issues, motivations, and constraints. Broad knowledge of medical center, HR, and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant industry federal and state laws and regulations. Thorough knowledge of organizational processes, protocols, and procedures. Ability to monitor compliance with relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Knowledge of resource management concepts and UC policies.
    • Leadership skills in employee supervision, HR administration, and conflict resolution. Demonstrated leadership skills in mentoring and advising employees. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines.

Ability to apply reasoning skills to evaluate issues and identify a potential solution. Provides guidance and judgment within defined standards to determine appropriate action. Advanced skills in planning, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Verbal and written communication skills to explain transcription and abstraction concepts, actively listen, and advise. Expert ability to communicate information clearly and concisely in both written and oral presentations, which includes creating high-impact presentations of complex information and issues with brevity, clarity, and accuracy.

    • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

    • Design, management and implementation, knowledge of ICD 10 Coding, Analysis and Release of information
