Health Underwriting Director directs and oversees the health insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups for medical and/or dental insurance. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Health Underwriting Director manages staff of underwriters at the organization. Provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications. Additionally, Health Underwriting Director has a strong knowledge of the underwriting discipline. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Health Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Health Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. Required:
Graduate of an approved program of nursing and currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Ohio.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Master’s Degree in a health-related field.
Minimum of seven years progressively responsible nursing and managerial/administrative experience including skill in budget and cost analysis.
Proven leadership, clinical competence and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated evidence of continuing professional self development.
Magnet recognized certification in clinical specialty or in nursing administration (e.g. CNML or NE/NEA-BC).
Reliable transportation to travel to ambulatory sites.
Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Physical Demands: May need to move around intermittently during the day, including sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and ambulating. May need to remain still for extended periods, including sitting and standing. Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications. Ability to read job related documents. Ability to use computer.
