Health Underwriting Director directs and oversees the health insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups for medical and/or dental insurance. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Health Underwriting Director manages staff of underwriters at the organization. Provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications. Additionally, Health Underwriting Director has a strong knowledge of the underwriting discipline. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Health Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     American National Property and Casualty Underwriting Department is seeking a full time Underwriting Manager to lead a regional team of underwriting professionals within the commercial and agricultural insurance market. This position provides the opportunity for the chosen candidate to collaborate with a variety of business partners, build agency relationships, drive new business and policy retention, and improve underwriting practices and processes.

    • Provide significant contribution to strategic objectives and initiatives, communicating effectively with senior leadership.
    • Partner with leadership team(s) to promote involvement and communicate through effective coaching & mentorship.
    • Provide recommendations on underwriting philosophies and guidelines for risk assessment and selection.
    • Evaluate referrals and work with your team on appropriate risk selection for multiple products associated with commercial and agricultural accounts.
    • Provide an owner’s mindset to assigned territory.
    • Monitor workflow and ensure team is meeting service level standards.
    • Participate in or provide ownership over projects and initiatives, both within the department and in collaboration with other business areas.
    • Serve as subject matter expert and remain up to date on industry trends.


    Qualifications:
    • College degree preferred.
    • Proficiency in commercial lines (Agriculture lines of business beneficial but not required)
    • Experience within P&C Underwriting
    • Insurance designations, such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, are preferred.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Demonstrated skills in leading teams (but will consider underwriting professionals who have completed developmental courses, designations, led/participated in projects, and have a willingness to travel for initial training if applicable)
    • Available to work onsite at either the New York, or Missouri campus. Please discuss with your recruiter.
    • Ability to travel as required (Field visits, conferences, campus visits)


    Salary for this position can range from $97,000 for candidates who are minimally qualified through $120,000 for more highly qualified candidates. Candidates outside of the range are encouraged to apply, and will be considered based on experience, skill and education.
