Physicians Mutual is seeking a candidate that is very well versed in Underwriting and demonstrates strong negotiation skills and leadership abilities. Underwrites Life & Health Insurance applications carrying the highest benefit amounts offered by the Company. Coordinates the development, implementation, and maintenance of PC or mainframe-based Life & Health systems to ensure compliance with state regulations and to document Underwriting practices and procedures. Provides underwriting advice or recommendations to various company personnel. Coordinates with various departments and TPAs to accomplish goals for developing and implementing procedural changes as needed. Represents Life & Health Underwriting Department at meetings involving compliance with state regulations and the development of new products, applications, and procedures.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration or equivalent is preferred. Will consider 5 years of work experience in exchange of bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of 7 to 12 years of experience in underwriting is required.
• An FLMI, AALU, or FALU designation is preferred.
• PC skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel is required
• Demonstrates strong decision-making skill to evaluate insurance risk, especially in unusual circumstances.
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, various body systems, and drugs and medications prescribed.
• Strong negotiation skills in contacts with customers for making offers and counter offers of insurance.
• Detailed knowledge of financial statements, tax returns, and IRS forms, plus corporate and business structure, and ownership to perform financial analysis.
• Detailed knowledge of policy coverage, underwriting rules and guidelines, Company policies and procedures.
• Detailed knowledge of government sponsored medical and disability plans.
• Detailed knowledge of occupational duties and hazards.
• Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information verbally and in writing to internal and external customers.
